He completed his schooling before graduating from the 12th grade. In addition to high school, he attended the private Augsburg Music School, Downtown Music Institute, where he also received vocal training. He lived in Munich for a time and moved to Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district in 2007.
In 2003, he participated in the ZDF casting show "Die deutsche Stimme 2003" under his surname Stiegelmair. To keep his parents' surname out of the public eye, he reverted to his birth name Bourani.
After several years of performing on small stages, he signed a record deal with Universal Music in 2010. He appeared as the opening act for tours by singer Philipp Poisel and the music group Culcha Candela. Radio stations like Bayern 3, Fritz, 1 Live, or SWR3 included Bourani's songs in their programs.
In May 2011, he performed as the opening act for Aura Dione at the 33rd German Protestant Church Congress in Dresden. In May 2011, Bourani's debut single "Nur in meinem Kopf" was released. In June, his debut album "Staub & Fantasie" was released, for which he wrote the music together with guitarist Julius Hartog. In addition to Bourani and Hartog, the studio album featured bassist Ralph Rieker and drummer Jürgen Stiehle, both from the band Die Happy, as well as pianist Arne Augustin.
In September 2011, Bourani competed for Bavaria in the Bundesvision Song Contest. He performed the song "Eisberg," which was released as the second single from the album "Staub & Fantasie," and finished tenth. In October 2011 and March 2012, Bourani went on a tour of Germany with his debut album. In December 2011, the single "Nur in meinem Kopf" received a gold record in Germany for 150,000 units sold.
In March 2012, Bourani released the title "Wunder" as the third and final single from his debut album. In 2012, Bourani opened for Unheilig on the "Lichter-der-Stadt-Tour 2012," with whom he released the song "Wie wir waren" in August 2012. In April 2013, Bourani was nominated for the German Music Authors' Prize of GEMA in the category of Pop Text.
In April 2014, his fifth single "Auf uns" was released as a preview of the album "Hey," which was released in May 2014. In June, ARD selected the song as the World Cup song for their coverage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. In September 2014, Bourani participated for Bavaria in the Bundesvision Song Contest for the second time with the song "Auf anderen Wegen." He finished sixth. In July 2015, the single "Ultraleicht" was released, followed by a collaboration single with Sido in August 2015. With the collaboration "Astronaut," Bourani reached number one on the German charts for the second time. In October 2015, Bourani released "Hey (Live)," his first live album.
In 2015, Bourani was a coach on the fifth season of the TV casting show "The Voice of Germany." Participants from his team finished second and third in the show's phone vote. In 2016, he won the 6th season of the show with Tay Schmedtmann, a contestant from his team. Mark Forster then took over his spot as a coach in the following 2017 season. In 2019, a feature with Udo Lindenberg titled "Radio Song (MTV Unplugged 2)" was released.
In July 2021, "Willkommen zurück," a single by German pop singer and rapper Clueso, featuring Bourani, was released. For Bourani, it was his first release in two and a half years.
