Her lips are like a rose so fair
She's got the sweetest face and the gentlest hands
I love the ground whereon she stands
I love my love and well she knows
I love the ground whereon she goes
And how I wish the day would come
Black is the colour of my true love's hair
Her lips are like a rose so fair
She's got the sweetest face and the gentlest hands
I love the ground whereon she stands
I go to the Clyde and mourn and weep
Satisfied I never will sleep
I'll write her a letter, just a few short lines
And suffer death ten thousand times
Black is the colour of my true love's hair
Her lips are like a rose so fair
She's got the sweetest face and the gentlest hands
I love the ground whereon she stands
The song "Black is the Colour" is a classic Scottish folk song that has been passed down from generation to generation. BLACK IS THE COLOR
Black is the Colour Black is the colour of my true love's hair.
Her face is something wond'rous fair
The clearest eyes and the dearest hands.
I love the grass whereon she stands.
I love my love and well she knows,
I love the grass whereon she goes
And still I hope the time will come When she and I will be as one.
Black is the colour of my true love's hair.
Her face is something wond'rous fair
The clearest eyes and the dearest hands.
I love the grass whereon she stands.

This is so absolutely exquisite. I'm not a folk "purist;" a work of art should stand on its own without being compared to something else. This arrangement has its own beauty. It's a singular interpretation, and Scholl takes us to a brand new place with his voice.

Some time ago I put up a video of "Barbara Allen Through the Ages" You might find it interesting. I had three versions of the song...the first by Andreas Scholl, the second by Joan Baez, and the third by Mac Wiseman, the country/folk singer. It explores, by its nature, some of the issues you raise.

I never quarrel, my friend, because I never make the mistake of thinking that my judgments are always right:-) There is much to what you say, and I basically agree with you. When we get into very old songs that are included under the general rubric of "folk," arrangements always come into play. The originals would be stark and plain indeed, but certainly authentic. If the song has been sung constantly for centuries, constant "modernizing" arrangements can eventually play havoc with them!

Oh dear! Edmund. I fear we are about to have our first serious quarrel . First I must declare my interests. I adore Herr Scholl's voice, greatly admire his wonderful pronunciation of English, and love his interpretations of most of the ancient, "British" songs. Also, one of my sons has frequent professional dealings with him. Having said that, this item is all wrong. The lush, inappropriate orchestration is overwhelming and he just sings the notes with almost no interpretive accents.
