He specialises in Baroque music. His range is akin to that of the celebrated 18th century alto castrato, Senesino, for whom Georg Friedrich Händel wrote his greatest alto roles. Fanfare magazine says: "There are more excellent countertenors before the public today than ever before, but one stands out above all others, as Caruso among tenors a century ago: Andreas Scholl". In 2005, Scholl was the first countertenor ever to be invited to sing solo at The Last Night of the Proms in London.

Beautiful voice, so pure and clear. And he interprets this sad, sad song so beautifully.
@civileso
It is in Scholl's album called "English Folk Songs and Lute Songs" that he recorded with Andreas Martin playing the lute. Absolutely a must have album!

Andreas Scholl should be canonized while he's still alive. Superb.

I thank you indeed.. I was waiting for one soul to comment on this one:)) And you are it! I love his interpretations of early music. His singing is so pure and simple yet so moving..

The fallow doe is metaphoric. She is his consort, as the lyrics reveal. 'Leman' in the final verse is the Middle English 'lover,' from the Old English 'leofman:' 'leof' - 'love'; and 'man' - 'a person.' 'Man' in the Old English is neuter, and can designate an adult of either sex. Hence 'leman:' - a 'loverman' (or woman). Incidentally, our word 'woman' shows the same derivation - the Anglo Saxon 'wifman:' 'wif' - 'female;' and 'man' - 'an adult person,' wherefrom we also have the Modern English 'wife.'
