Fiery Crash
Andrew Bird Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Jet waves are driving me
Things in nicer motions
We are hauling to space
G force is twisting the faith with superstition
A fatal premonition
You know you've got to envision
Oh, close your eyes and you wake up
Face stuck to a vinyl settee
Oh, a lot is starting to break off
Just as you were starting to say
Someday I'll propose I don't know
These childs in magazines
Blue doves in the sea on and devote every monitor screen
You were caught in the cross fire
Where every human face is reaching for your knees or ears
Delivering position, a fatal premonition
Save our lives, you've got to envision
To save all our lives, you've got to envision
And to save all our lives, you've got to envision
The fiery crash, it's just a formality
Or must I explain, just a nod to mortality
Before you get on and before you get on a plane
Oh, close your eyes and you wake up
Face stuck to a vinyl settee
Oh, a lot is starting to break off
What was that you were going to say?
The lyrics of Andrew Bird's song "Fiery Crash" seem to depict a metaphorical journey into space or an aerial journey, but a journey that takes a turn for the worse. The lyrics evoke a sense of danger, uncertainty, and mortality as the singer contemplates the inevitability of a "fiery crash" that seems to loom over him. The first verse sets the stage for this journey, with the singer feeling at the mercy of the forces of nature and technology, with stars missing him and jet waves driving him.
The second verse introduces the idea of a "fatal premonition," a sense that something bad is bound to happen, but the singer urges us to "envision" the fiery crash, perhaps as a form of preparation or acceptance. This fatalistic sentiment is counterbalanced by the melancholic refrain that seems to suggest a longing for a normal life, a desire to settle down and propose to someone. The third and final verse brings these themes together, with the singer acknowledging that the fiery crash is just a "nod to mortality," but one that cannot be ignored.
The lyrics of "Fiery Crash" are open to interpretation, but they seem to suggest a complex mix of emotions, including fear, resignation, and a longing for connection. The contrast between the epic imagery of space travel and the mundanity of a proposal or the discomfort of a vinyl settee creates a sense of tension and ambiguity that is typical of Andrew Bird's songwriting. Ultimately, the song seems to be a meditation on mortality and the human condition, and the fragile balance between our aspirations and our limitations.

To me, this song is about the eye of the storm waking up and mass crashing down like a galaxy... a giant storm of light and dark.
Its a plea for a new beginning brought on by something huge impacting the surface of this planet.
