Idk if anyone cares, but I’m gonna share my story if that’s ok.
When I was severely depressed in college, I would lay in my bed for hours on end just staring at the ceiling and feel numb. There was no sadness, no anger, just numbness to get me through every day. The one thing that would make me feel something was this song. Somehow, in all the darkness I felt, this song gave me a reason to continue going through each day. Thank you Justin Vernon for writing this masterpiece and for saving my life.

Edit: wow I’m floored by all the love I’ve gotten from complete strangers. I am eternally grateful for all of you. I’ve made it through all of that and if you relate to my story, I’m glad you guys have to.

Depression is not an easy demon to overcome, and many times you'll think things are better but it will get worse at every new dip in your life. Personally I took my backpack and went away to seek for realism and happiness. It does help but going back home leaves me with a huge fear of following again that same killing routine. Good luck !

I remember listening to this when I was 13 years old, when the abuse from my mom and stepdad first started. I’d lay in bed with the curtains drawn, lights turned off, and a single candle lit. I’d close my eyes and the music would take me away. I’d close my eyes and dream away the years in my mind.

Music got me through some really rough times. But I’m 24 years old now, with a loving husband and a one year old baby boy. I’m creating the family I never had. Now, I play this song and dance around the house with my son, he laughs and I smile. I made it.

The first time I listened to this song was on Season 4 Episode 16 of House M.D. (Wilson’s Heart). The final sequence with Wilson and Amber was heartbreaking, but what never fails to bring me to tears is Amber saying: We’re always going to want a little longer. She’s right; we never want to let go of those we love. That includes their bodies, their souls, as well as the memories we have from them. Letting go and moving on is hard. A couple of months ago I was with my boyfriend, we were taking a walk when it started raining, so we went in his car. Suddenly we were surrounded by thunders and we stayed there listening to this song and the sound of rain hitting the windows. He put his head on my lap and I stroked his hair while looking at each other in silence. i overdosed back in july, i lost everything, after overdosing i turned the lights off and listened to this, i ended up going to the hospital where my girlfriend met me, telling me she loved me, i hated that i made her feel that pain but i loved the feeling of being so openly wanted, others wanted me to stay alive and it wasnt just words, i could feel it for the only time in my life. this song causes me incredible pain but in a bittersweet way, i’ll come back every now and then. it means a lot to me, i chose this to be the last thing i heard in my life but that didnt work out

I listened to this album the entire winter of 2010 painting in an old unheated garage in northern Italy. Day in and day out it became the soundtrack to the cold winter outside and the warm pulse of life on the inside of my studio as I poured my soul out on to each canvas. I finally reached the core right there. Thank you for helping me unleash that.

This song is actually the only song played in a minor tuning in "For Emma Forever Ago". However, its the only song on the album that represents happiness, Bon Iver moving on from a sad and emotional part of his life and starting a new chapter. Brings me back to my relationship that ended with my highschool sweatheart who I was dating for 4 years. Bittersweat.

From my readings of the comments below, it appears that people view the song as having two roles. On one side, the song appears to make people happy and optimistic. The other seems to be a melancholic realisation of their own emotions based on real or imagined experiences. I consider the song to be a marriage of the two. Only through engaging with ourselves and our emotions, no matter the heartache that may accompany this, can we truly elevate ourselves to a better understanding of the world around us and our position in it. At the apex of this realisation is the happiness that emanates from the song, not a loud and boisterous happiness, but a calm and self-assured understanding that in the end, everything will be well.

There's only a few songs which will forever have meaning to your life and the changes you made in it. re:Stacks is one of them. The line "This is not the sound of a new man or a crispy realization. It is the sound of the unlocking and the lift away" has meant so much to me in getting through the worst of times.
It's like being in quicksand, you do not get out by struggling and putting in all of your effort. You get out by staying calm, finding peace in your situation and making slow, conscious steps. re:Stacks gives the same type of inspiration: recovering from heartbreaking situations is not about changing yourself or doing things differently, but finding peace and acceptance in the pain.

I listened to this song frequently while I was in a pretty dark place personally, and for some reason it gave me hope that things would be ok. It still ushers in a feeling of gentle peace every time I listen. I can't quite put my finger on it, but this song is powerful in its own way.

I discovered this song a bit over a year ago, just before I got into the most serious relationship of my life. She was a month older than me, probably a bit more mature too. She was beautiful, she was smart, she was everything I had imagined love would be and at the same time I was surprised that it was possible to fall as deep as I did. She really quickly became my everything, I showed her this whole album and most importantly this song. She loved it, we listened to it all the time, talked about it a lot too. I pushed some friends to the side, to make room for her, cause at that point, she was really all i cared about.

A few days ago she called me, she was away on holiday with a friend and I was still at home. She told me she had cheated the night before. I was furious, broke up with her on the phone and I've been in deep pain since.

But there's something about this song, it's not a sad song, it's a song about letting go of what was.
I'm so glad i discovered it before we first met, it somehow makes me feel like it's mine and not ours. It makes me feel hopeful, hopeful that I'll love as much again, hopeful that I'll recover from the pain she has caused and most importantly, find myself again.

What I love the most about this song is that it doesn't get loud. You know how some songs start slow then speed up and get loud?? Yeah this doesn't do that and I could ACTUALLY listen to this to go to sleep without that one part suddenly blaring me awake 🤣 other than that...this melody and lyrics and the guitar strings are just...❤

This song is very special to me. I listened to it countless times whilst travelling around Europe last year. It reminds me of my favourite places and people, even though they are gone and so far out of reach. Its a sad song, but it reminds me of a happy time. When I hear this song all I think about is how amazing it is that I have been here living this life for so long. Not only that but others have been doing the same. We all have this incredibly unique, wondrous, sad, beautiful story that we carry around with us everyday. No one really knows our individual tale in all its detail but they can empathize, because they have their own singular story, just as rich as ours. We're all here together.

I remember listening to this on a roadtrip with my Girlfriend i Scotland. Driving in the dark, on narrow roads with the rain comming down. Everything came together for short period. We repeatedly returned to this piece, when we cuddled on the couch, sat on the pier, ate dinner.. This song felt very defining for how close we were.
Listening to it today yields a small amount of the feeling... but it also turns me inside out with pain from missing her.

I absolutely love the fact that the song doesn't end abruptly, but you can still hear the sound of the guitar being picked up and Bon Iver leaving. You can hear his presence in the silence that follows the song. that detail really makes this recording special to me.

Someone told me this a while ago when I depressed because I had a grave injury and surgery in my leg just before pandemic and pandemic made it difficult to recover and going to the doctor because of lockdown. I had to take academic and career gap year due to this (gap yeae considered a bad ugly stain in Asian work environment). Someone told me, "you have to fight for your happiness, it doesn't come easy."
