Andrew Lloyd Webber Lyrics

CROWD

Hosanna
Hey Sanna Sanna Sanna Hosanna
Hey Sanna Hosanna
Hey JC, JC won't you smile at me?
Sanna Hosanna
Hey Superstar

CAIAPHAS

Tell the rabble to be quiet, we anticipate a riot.
This common crowd, is much too loud.
Tell the mob who sing your song that they are fools and they are wrong.
They are a curse. They should disperse.

CROWD

Hosanna
Hey Sanna Sanna Sanna Hosanna
Hey Sanna Hosanna
Hey JC, JC you're alright by me
Sanna Hosanna
Hey Superstar

JESUS

Why waste your breath moaning at the crowd?
Nothing can be done to stop the shouting.
If every tongue were stilled
The noise would still continue.
The rocks and stone themselves would start to sing:

CROWD AND JESUS

Hosanna
Hey Sanna Sanna Sanna Hosanna
Hey Sanna Hosanna

CROWD (alone)

Hey JC, JC won't you fight for me?
Sanna Hosanna Hey Superstar

JESUS

Sing me your songs,
But not for me alone.
Sing out for yourselves,
For you are bless-ed.
There is not one of you
Who can not win the kingdom.
The slow, the suffering,
The quick, the dead.

CROWD and JESUS

Hosanna
Hey Sanna Sanna Sanna Hosanna
Hey Sanna Hosanna

CROWD (alone)

Hey JC, JC won't you die for me?
Sanna Hosanna Hey Superstar

Overall Meaning

The song "Hosanna" from the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice features three different groups of speakers: the crowd, Caiaphas, and Jesus himself. The chorus, represented by the crowd, laments and praises Jesus with the titular phrase "Hosanna," meaning "save us" or "help us." They call out to him as "Superstar" and "JC", asking him to pay attention to them and even fight for them. Caiaphas, a Pharisee and one of Jesus's enemies, tries to quiet the "rabble" before him, as he sees their enthusiasm as a potential problem. However, Jesus recognizes their fervor and the inevitability of his fate, telling them not to bother trying to quell the noise, as the rocks themselves would sing if the people stopped. He encourages them to sing not just for him, but for themselves, as all of them are capable of achieving salvation. The song is a religious metaphor for the struggle between challenging authority and surrendering to it, as well as the individual's search for their own destiny.

This Hosanna is wonderful. It is rollicking, almost jazzy. And the contrast with the gentle, achingly beautiful Pie Jesu sung by Sarah Brightman shortly to follow is striking and moving.

Loved this as a kid and it is often in my mind as I go throughout my day.
