Masquerade / Why so Silent...
Andrew Lloyd Webber Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Masquerade, hide your face so the world will never find you
Masquerade, every face a different shade
Masquerade, look around, there's another mask behind you
Flash of mauve, splash of puce
Fool and king, ghoul and goose
Green and black, queen and priest
Take your turn, take a ride
On the merry-go-round in an inhuman race
Thigh of blue, true is false
Who is who
Curl of lip, swirl of gown
Ace of hearts, face of clown, faces
Drink it in, drink it up 'til you've drowned
In the light, in the sound
But who can name the face?
Masquerade, grinning yellows, spinning reds
Masquerade, take your fill, let the spectacle astound you
Masquerade, burning glances, turning heads
Masquerade, stop and stare at the sea of smiles around you
Masquerade, seething shadows breathing lies
Masquerade, you can fool any friend who ever knew you
Masquerade, leering satyrs, peering eyes
Masquerade, run and hide, but a face will still pursue you
What a night, what a crowd
Makes you glad
Makes you proud
All the crème, de la crème
Watching us, watching them
And all our fears are in the past
Three months of relief
Of delight, of elysian peace
And we can breathe at last
No more notes, no more ghost
Here's a health, here's a toast
To a prosperous year, to the new chandelier
And may our splendor never fade (what a joy) (what a change)
What a blessed release
And what a masquerade
Think of it, a secret engagement
Look, your future bride, just think of it
But why is it secret? What have we to hide?
Please, let's not fight (Christine, you're free)
Wait 'til the time is right (when will that be?)
It's an engagement, not a crime
Christine, what are you afraid of?
Let's not argue (let's not argue)
Please pretend (I can only hope)
You will understand in time (I'll understand in time)
Masquerade, paper faces on parade
Masquerade, hide your face so the world will never find you
Masquerade, every face a different shade
Masquerade, look around, there's another mask behind you
Masquerade, burning glances, turning heads
Masquerade, stop and stare at the sea of smiles around you
Masquerade, grinning yellows, spinning reds
Masquerade, take your fill, let the spectacle astound you
Why so silent, good Messieurs?
Did you think that I had left you for good?
Have you missed me, good Messieurs?
I have written you an opera
Here, I bring the finished score
Don Juan triumphant
I advise you to comply
My instructions should be clear
Remember, there are worse things than a shattered chandelier
Your chains are still mine, you will sing for me
The song "Masquerade/Why so Silent" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous musical "The Phantom of the Opera" depicts a masquerade party where everyone is wearing a mask to hide their true identity. The lyrics describe the various paper faces on parade, all with different shades and identities, some real and some false. The party-goers take their turn on the merry-go-round of life, pretending to be something they are not. The song is sung by Raoul, the Phantom, and the ensemble.
The first part of the song describes the carnival-like atmosphere of the masquerade, with its "flash of mauve" and "splash of puce," as well as the various faces -- "fool and king, ghoul and goose, green and black, queen and priest, trace of rouge, face of beast." The second part of the song takes a darker turn, as the Phantom appears and reminds the party-goers that they cannot escape their true selves, and that even behind their masks, they will still be pursued. The song ends with a reprise of the first section, as the party-goers revel in their masquerade.
Overall, the song is a commentary on the human condition and our tendency to hide our true selves behind masks, whether literal or metaphorical. It encourages the listener to look beyond the surface and find the truth beneath the mask.

Things that give me super chills:
when the little music begins at 0:56
when they all whisper a chorus starting at 2:41
when the brass starts getting so exciting at 4:59 and the hit afterwards
Things that give me chills:
pretty much everything else

Have you noticed at 6:07, when the music changes, Christine is the only one who stands still while the others are moving? It's as if she realizes, before anyone else, that the Phantom is here, and she's so scared that she freezes for a moment. Incredible! Sierra's acting in this moment is excellent!

Phantom's outfit here just oozes badassery. Great example of the incredible costume design of the whole production... well that and all the other costumes in this song, of course!

And yes, i agree!! Everytime i watch a new phantom adaptation, i keep waiting for the Red Death performance!! Btw what's your fave Red Death? To me are: Lon Chaney's and this one (side by Gerard Butler's one)

@⛧ 𝔈𝔰𝔪𝔢𝔯𝔞𝔩𝔡𝔞 ⛧ This one's always felt like the Lon Cheney Sr. one but updated with a few more bells and whistles to make it a tad flashier. The 1925 version would seem flat and lacking in flair in comparison to all the other outfits in this version.
As such, while I love the Lon Cheney Sr. Red Death outfit, the Royal Albert Hall 25th Anniversay Ramin Malik version seen here is my favorite.
