All Our Lives
Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw this old friend at the Eveleigh bar
Life hadn't treated him so well
A heart so gold, and words so blue
In a body home from hell

He said, "If I could tell you one thing, I would tell you this:
There's only one mistake that I have made
It's giving up the music in my fingertips
By trying to get to heaven through my veins."

All our lives
I watched you search beneath the fallen skies
This was no path to glory
You always walked before me
But you came back to warn me
All our lives

I saw this woman with tears in her eyes
Driving beside me yesterday
She turned her head, then I turned mine
And I watched her drive away

I thought, if I could tell her something, I would tell her this
There's only two mistakes that I have made
It's running from the people who could love me best
And trying to fix a world that I can't change

All our lives
I watched you search beneath the fallen skies
This was no path to glory
You always walked before me
But you came back to warn me
All our lives

I remember being young and staring at my hands
In the middle of the night, the first light of the morning
My room like a church, voices down the hall
I barely made 'em out, but sometimes you don't want to know
Now that I'm older, I can tell you this
The mornings I miss, but I don't really miss the voices
You've got a choice, I've got the hands
Skeletons and plans, you've got to let 'em go

All our lives
I watched you search beneath the fallen skies

All our lives
I watched you search beneath the fallen skies
This was no path to glory
You always walked before me
But you came back to warn me
All our lives

All our lives
I watched you search beneath the fallen skies
This was no path to glory
You always walked before me

But you came back to warn me
All our lives

Overall Meaning

The song "All Our Lives" by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness describes two different encounters that the singer has had with individuals who have faced difficult times in their lives. In the first verse, the singer meets an old friend at a bar who had given up music and instead turned to drugs to try and reach a state of happiness. The friend advises the singer not to make the same mistake and to hold onto his passion for music. The second verse describes a woman who the singer sees crying while driving. He wishes he had the chance to tell her not to run away from those who love her and to accept that there are some things in the world that cannot be changed.

The chorus of the song describes how the singer has watched the people around him search for happiness and fulfillment but ultimately come up short. It acknowledges that life is not always easy, but warns against taking the wrong path to try and achieve happiness. Instead, the song advises that we should be true to ourselves, let go of our past mistakes, and learn to live in the present.

Overall, "All Our Lives" is a song about resilience and learning from our experiences. It encourages listeners to pursue what makes them happy, while also recognizing that we cannot control everything that happens to us.

I saw them when they opened for Panic! At the Disco back in July. I had High Dive suck in my head for weeks. They've definitely gained a new fan!

Everything about this song is just... wow. The sound, the words, it's all great, man.

I've followed him his entire career and grew up learning to play piano with some of his Something Corporate. From that to Jack's Mannequin to this, all epic and he's only getting better!

I wish I'd never heard this song. That way I could hear it again for the fist time. Keep up the good work Andrew!

Awesome song. Have been following Andrew since 2002 and not once has he let me down.

It is almost criminal that he isn't more popular than he is but I am glad he has a solid fan base that has stuck with him.
