Careless Whisper
Andrew Ridgeley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Time can never mend
The careless whispers of a good friend
To the heart and mind
If your answer's kind
If there's no comfort in the truth
Pain is all you'll find

Should've known better, yeah

Oh-oh-oh, oh, oh
Mm-mm

I feel so unsure
As I take your hand and lead you to the dance floor
As the music dies
Something in your eyes
Calls to mind a silver screen
And all its sad goodbyes

I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
I should've known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I'd been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you, oh

Time can never mend
The careless whispers of a good friend
To the heart and mind
If your answer's kind
There's no comfort in the truth
Pain is all you'll find

I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
I should've known better than to cheat a friend (should've known better, yeah)
And waste the chance that I'd been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you, oh

Never without your love

Tonight the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd
Maybe it's better this way
We'd hurt each other with the things we want to say

We could have been so good together
We could have lived this dance forever
But now who's gonna dance with me?
Please stay

And I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
I should've known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I'd been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you, oh

(Now that you're gone) now that you're gone

(Now that you're gone) was what I did so wrong, so wrong
That you had to leave me alone?

Overall Meaning

The song "Careless Whisper" by Andrew Ridgeley is a song about lost love and regret. The lyrics explain the heartache caused by cheating on a good friend who had become more, and the knowledge that the relationship has been forever changed. The opening lines state "Time can never mend the careless whisper of a good friend to the heart and mind. If your answer's kind, there's no comfort in the truth, pain is all you'll find." This demonstrates the understanding that the truth will hurt, but at the same time, it is necessary to acknowledge it to move on. The following lines, "I should have known better, yeah" acknowledge the writer's regret for acting on impulses, and not considering the potential consequences.

The chorus repeats that the writer will never dance again, as the guilt of cheating continues to haunt him, symbolized by having guilty feet that have no rhythm. The lines "We could have been so good together, we could have lived this dance forever. But now, who's gonna dance with me?" speaks to the lost potential of the relationship that will never be realized again. The final lines, "Now that you're gone, what I did that was so wrong? So wrong that you had to leave me alone?" again demonstrate the writer's realization that his actions caused the end of the relationship, and that the loss will forever linger.

100%. Andrew was the most amazing kind of friend we all dreamed of having. He was totally selfless and with no ego, put his friend Yog ahead of himself always.
If it wasn't for Andrew, George Michael wouldn't have been.
Amazing trajectory for both Andrew and Yog. It was a match made in heaven and pure fate. These two were destined to meet up and create the magic they did.
I am so glad I grew up in that era when Wham hit the music scene. I still remember clearly when I first heard Wham Rap, Club Tropicana and Young Guns and thought, Wow !, these guys are awesome.
It wasn't until they released Make it Big, is when It really hit home. That album was HUGE !
The 80s were the best years of my life. We'll sadly never see an Era like that ever again. The memories keep my soul happy.

Careless Whisper is an absolute masterpiece. Everything about this song - the video, the words, the rhythm, the look - it just had it all.

Fair play to Andrew, stuck by George and never sold out, seems like a nice guy.
