Last Christmas
Andrew Ridgley Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But the very next day, you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away (you gave it away)
This year, to save me from tears
Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance but you still catch my eye
Tell me baby do you recognize me?
Well it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me
(Happy Christmas) I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "I Love You" I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now I know you'd fool me again
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away (you gave it away)
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special (special)
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special (special)
A crowded room, friends with tired eyes
I'm hiding from you and your soul of ice
My god, I thought you were someone to rely on
Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover but you tore me apart, ooh-hoo
Now I've found a real love, you'll never fool me again
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away (you gave it away)
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special (special)
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, you gave it away (you gave it away)
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special (special)
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart (I gave you my heart)
A man under cover but you tore him apart
Maybe next year I'll give it to someone
I'll give it to someone special (special, someone)
The lyrics to Andrew Ridgley's song Last Christmas reflect the heartbreak and disappointments of a failed relationship. The singer reminisces about giving their heart to someone last Christmas, only to have it given away the very next day. This year, the singer vows to give their heart to someone special to save themselves from experiencing the same heartache again.
The singer admits to being foolish and falling for the same tricks again if the person they once loved were to kiss them now. The crowded room and tired eyes of friends suggest that the singer is feeling lonely and isolated from their former lover. They believed that the person they gave their heart to was someone they could rely on, but they were wrong. The singer finds comfort and hopes to never be fooled again with their new love.
The song's chorus repeats the phrase "Last Christmas, I gave you my heart" to emphasize the traumatic experience the singer went through. The lyrics are filled with imagery, some of which represent the warmth of love, such as the face of a lover with a fire in their heart, while others represent the isolation and heartbreak, such as a man under cover and a soul of ice.

80s child here. That song grew over time.

True. It wasn't that big a deal back then. IMHO

Lover it immediately and always been a favorite
@mmsiphonevinyls1027
Yes it has. I remember when i was a little kid in the late 90s, it was my favourite Xmas song but didnt really seem to have “iconic” status yet. I think it has become more beloved since Georges death, given that it was on Christmas day
