Grammer started as a busker on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica and later performed in the Viper Room, the Roxy Theatre (West Hollywood) and the House of Blues. Grammer perfected his writing skills as an artist whilst performing on the streets and according to the Keep Your Head Up Songfacts he wrote the song to raise his own spirits after a particularly long day.
His debut video for "Keep Your Head Up" (starring Rainn Wilson) was an iTunes video of the week in 2010, and the version on the artist's site uses an interactive interface that allows the viewer to "send the singer into goofy scenarios". He performed the song on The Rachael Ray Show on November 17, 2010. He is currently opening for Plain White T's for the second leg of their "Wonders of the Younger" tour.
In January 2011, he was named an "Artist to Watch" by Billboard magazine.
He performed at SXSW 2011, playing BMI's Acoustic Brunch, where he was one of the artists contributing to a recording produced by Hanson to benefit the victims of the 2011 Japan earthquake.
His "Keep Your Head Up" video was nominated for MTV's O Music Award for Most Innovative Music Video in April 2011

Like a rescue comin' just in time
Yeah, you save me when I cannot see the light
Like a heartbeat to a lonely drum
When I thought that, that the end had come
You remind me that it's only just begun
Took my soul down to the water
Long as we got one another singin' (oh, oh, oh-oh)
Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright
Got a brand new, got a brand new
Got a brand new lease on life
Everything's gonna be alright
When I look into your eyes
Got a brand new, got a brand new
Got a brand new lease on life
Like a deep breath wanna take you in
When I hold ya I'm alive again
You're the proof that God's been listenin'
You're the side where the grass is green
Yeah, you shake me like a tambourine
No jerseys but we make quite a team
When ya took my soul down to the water
Mama I came back a different man
Long as we got one another singin' (oh, oh, oh-oh)
Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright
Got a brand new, got a brand new
Got a brand new lease on life
Everything's gonna be alright
When I look into your eyes
Got a brand new, got a brand new
Got a brand new lease on life
Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Lease on life
Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Lease on life
Everything's gon' be alright
Everything's gon' be alright
Got a brand new, got a brand new
Got a brand new lease on life
Everything's gonna be alright
When I look into your eyes
Got a brand new, got a brand new
Got a brand new lease on life
Took my soul down to the water
Mama I came back a different man
Long as we got one another singin'
Got a brand new lease on life
Took my soul down to the water
Mama I came back a different man
"Lease on Life" is a song by Andy Grammer that speaks about the redemptive power of love. In the first verse, Grammer compares the healing love he feels to the hope provided by a sunrise on a dark night or a rescue during a moment of peril. He describes how his love interest brings him out of the darkness and into the light, like a heartbeat pounding in sync with the rhythm of a drum. Even when faced with despair, she reminds him that there is always a new beginning to be had.
The chorus provides the central message of the song. Grammer repeats continuously that everything is going to be okay because of his love interest. He finds hope in their relationship and the strength to carry on. When he looks into her eyes, he feels a sense of renewal and a fresh start.
In the second verse, Grammer reinforces how his lover completes him. He compares her to fresh air; he can't get enough of her as if he wants to breathe her in. She is the proof that he has always been heard, that his prayers have been answered. Together, they make a great team, even without jerseys, which is a reference to sports teams.
Overall, Grammer's "Lease on Life" is a powerful song that celebrates the transformative nature of love. It's a classic reminder that one's personal strength can be increased with love and that no matter how challenging life gets, there's always hope for a brighter future.
