Àfrica
Andy McKee Lyrics

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in, 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some long forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, "Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you"
It's gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

Hurry boy, she's waiting there for you

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
(I bless the rain)
I bless the rains down in Africa
(I bless the rain)
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa

(Ah, gonna take the time)
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

Overall Meaning

Andy McKee's song "Africa" has gained popularity since its release in 2010. The lyrics tell a story of a man who hears the drums of Africa echoing, while his companion hears only whispers of conversation. The man is on a journey and stops to seek advice from an old man who tells him to hurry because something is waiting for him. The next verse paints a picture of the African Safari with wild dogs crying out in the night as they seek solitary company. The singer of the story seeks to cure what's inside him, fearful of the person he's become. The chorus "I bless the rains down in Africa, gonna take some time to do the things we never had" reveals the desire of the singer to take their time and do the things they had never done before, taking pleasure in the rain and beauty of Africa. The song ends with a plea to hurry, as something is waiting for him.

Went to school with andy at washburn rural 93-96. He was killer back then. He played hendrix at the battle of the bands in 95 and was spot on. Even back then I never saw him without a guitar on his shoulder; no matter the time or place. Cool guy, down to earth, quiet.
