Blue Beret
Andy Partridge/XTC Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
So take yourself a hike from the kitchen sink
Me, I like to roam
Wasn't built in a day
And night throws the stars in our way
Meanwhile on planet earth
Some people are dying for the right to say
Well, we're all dying so we better have a ton of fun along the way
I say hats off, get your hats off, take your hats off, get your hats off
For the blue beret
Blue beret, blue beret
The wind has blown it off his head
And sent it spinning straight to nowhere
Nowhere to get ahead in this life
Life is sometimes longer than you need
Especially if it's thrown away on hate and greed
Well, me I like to think while the other fish swim
But sharks made a meal out of him
Meanwhile on bone dry land
Some people are dying for the right to say
Some people just want the right to say
Some people are dying 'cause the other people busy blowing them away
Some people are merely blown away
Well, we're all dying so we better have a ton of fun along the way
I say hats off, take your hats off, get your hats off, take your hats off
To the blue beret
Blue beret, blue beret
The wind has blown it off his head
And sent it spinning straight to nowhere
Nowhere to get ahead in this life
So just love your dog and don't kick your wife
Put down that knife, watch out the windows,
And blow your hat away
The song "Blue Beret" by XTC is a poignant reminder to live life to the fullest, as it can be shorter than we imagine. The song starts with a call to action, urging people to take a break and step out of their mundane lives. The singer prefers to wander and explore, knowing all too well that life is fleeting. The mention of stars shining in the night sky adds a sense of wonder and magic to the lyrics.
The second part of the song addresses the harsh realities of life, with some people fighting and dying for their beliefs. The singer acknowledges that death is inevitable, and it's crucial to make the most of life. The blue beret mentioned in the song appears to be a symbol of peacekeeping, and it's blown away by the wind. The singer suggests that life can be unpredictable, and one must enjoy it while they can. The closing lines of the song are a plea for people to be kind to one another and appreciate their loved ones.
Overall, "Blue Beret" is a touching and insightful song that encourages people to make the most of their time on this earth.

This is Andy's home demo of this song, I believe. Why they chose not to record this or put it on an album is beyond me. Fantastic song.
@absolving
I agree. And yes this came from Fuzzy Warbles (most likely)

@Tunnofun
Thank you so much for posting this! I thought the only time this was performed for the pubic was on that MTV broadcast. I never knew there was a recorded studio version! Where did you get this from? Brilliant song! Andy Partridge is a total genius,and on the level of John Lennon and Paul McCartney! He is like a modern day Mozart! Andy Partridge & XTC are SO underated, it makes me sick to my stomach! If XTC would have had the Beatles manager,record company & producer- They would have been HUGE!
@sylphr
Contractual obligations sent them spinning nearly to a loony bin. He isn’t one to compromise. The industry killed Lennon. Hats off...Partridge escaped! My 2 bits.
@GreatBowlsAfire
wow awesome.. THANKS A MILLION. :D
i know a live radio version (1989) of this, where verse 2 is actually ...
"life is sometimes sentence for the crime, especially if you're guilty of killing time..." <3
@sylphr
Yea I have that on a rarity tape, I think it was called “Secret Out-Tapes”.
@sylphr
A few other changes made here as well, I prefer that recording a lot more!
@Boylieboyle
Yeah, there's Richard Branston to thank for that.
