QUITE LIKE YOU
Andy Shauf Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

jeremy's so stoned
i'd be suprised
if he saw the tears in sherry's eyes
she's standing in the corner
staring at the floor
i wonder what the hell he did this time

normally i wouldn't dare to be so bold
tonight i think i'll ask her what is wrong
she seems a bit embarrassed and i understand
i say "i wish that you were having a good time"

she says "you know i've never really met someone like you"
you know i've never really met someone like you

i'm not one to speak up but i've had a few
so i start cutting jeremy right in two
i say "i don't know what you see in him
it seems to me that all he ever does is bring you down"
i'm spilling my drink as i really start
tearing one of my best friends apart
she's getting uneasy and my drunken speech
ends as my hand finds its way to hers

i say "you know i've never really met someone like you"
you know i've never really met someone like you

jeremy walks over and to my surprise
sherry puts her arm around his side

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Quite Like You" by Andy Shauf seem to tell a story of a situation that took place at a party. The singer, who seems to be a close friend of Jeremy's and knows Sherry as well, notices the tears in Sherry's eyes and wonders what could have caused them. As he talks to Sherry and asks her what is wrong, she responds by saying she has never really met someone like him. The singer starts to criticize Jeremy, stating that he brings her down and asks her to consider other options.

As the singer continues to speak, he becomes more and more emotional and begins to express his feelings for Sherry. He tells her that he has never met anyone like her and she reciprocates by putting her arm around Jeremy. The lyrics suggest that the singer may have ruined his friendship with Jeremy due to his drunken behavior and inappropriate outbursts.

A year ago, I was in a relationship and the person I was with introduced me to this song and I remember listening to it and I related to it immediately. He was like the narrator and I was Sherry. It very soon became our song. Now when I listen to it, after out relationship has ended, considerable time has passed, this song takes on a very different meaning where, I am the narrator and I always had him saying that "he never met someone like me"... I'm grateful to him for many things, most of which is the music he introduced me too. So even though I've not met someone quite like him either, this is a bittersweet memory that I'll treasure. It's remarkable how another person's work can connect so deeply to my own life experiences.

I love this song even though it brings so memories. There's something so beautiful in the compoisiton of it :)

Thank you Mr. Shauf!

Fun fact: The narrator ends up being gay for Jeremy further on in the album. This whole song is supposed to make you believe the narrator is into Sherry but he was never into Sherry to begin with. The narrator actually starts talking badly about Jeremy so Sherry will break up with Jeremy so the narrator can have Jeremy for himself. This is revealed later on in the album.

@spoocyguy

Man his music is so chill, refreshing, and contemplative. Anyone know of similar artists? Can't get enough of the simple and honest tunes of the Shauf.

@RebornLegacy

I honestly can't think of another artist like Andy Shauf. There's probably someone similar, maybe Jens Lakemen.
