I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face
Andy Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've grown accustomed to her face
She almost makes the day begin
I've grown accustomed to the tune she whistles night and noon
Her smiles, her frowns, her ups, her downs
Are second nature to me now
Like breathing out and breathing in
I was serenely independent and content before we met
Surely I could always be that way again and yet
I've grown accustomed to her looks, accustomed to her voice
Accustomed to her face
I'm very grateful she's a woman and so easy to forget
Rather like a habit one can always break and yet

I've grown accustomed to the trace of something in the air
Accustomed to her face

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" by Andy Williams depict a man who has become used to the presence of a woman in his life. The singer speaks of how he has grown familiar with her face, her tune, and her personality. He admits that he was happily independent before they met and yet, he has become attached to her. The lyrics suggest that he may not desire her as much as he has just become accustomed to her being around.

He acknowledges that he is grateful for her presence but also implies that forgetting her would be easy as she is just a habit. The singer concedes that becoming accustomed to her face has given him a sense of comfort and stability. The song is a reflection on how love changes a person's perspective and how they adapt to the new sources of happiness in their life. It talks about how familiarity can breed affection, and how the smallest things can become precious when a person falls in love.

@ben2715 If you search for "Andy Williams" and "Jack Benny," you will find a clip of the number in context with the first 12 minutes of the episode. After patter with Jack and the two elderly ladies, Jack announces that Andy will sing a number from his new "My Fair Lady" album. There's also another clip with the rest of the episode.

@garysclassics Believe it or not, this was a musical spot on an October 1964 episode of "The Jack Benny Show." The directing is indeed stunning, and what a flawless, beautifully executed performance. The rest of the episode was classic Benny comedy fare (he made an unsuspecting Andy dress in a tux to perform at a grand opening -- of a meat market). But before the storyline unfolded, Jack and Andy chatted with a couple of elderly members of Jack's fan club (including the great Madge Blake).
