The youngest son of Celedonio Romero, he is a former member of the family's guitar quartet Los Romeros. Angel Romero made his professional debut at the age of six and at sixteen he appeared as the Los Angeles Philharmonic's first guitar soloist performing Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, in its first premiere on the west coast.

As a soloist he has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic, the New World Symphony, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He studied conducting with Eugene Ormandy, the conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra and has conducted for the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Royal Philharmonic, Germany’s NDR Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Symphoniker, the Beijing Philharmonic, the Euro-Asia Philharmonic, the Shanghai Symphony, the Bogotá Philharmonic, the Chicago Sinfonietta, the Orquesta de Baja California, the Santa Barbara Symphony, the San Diego Symphony and the San Diego Chamber Orchestra. His recordings can be found on Delos International, RCA Victor Red Seal, RCA Victor Worldwide, Telarc and Angel/EMI. In 1991, at New York’s Lincoln Center, he gave a world premiere of Joaquin Rodrigo’s “Rincones de España”.

He performed the score for The Milagro Bean Field War, directed by Robert Redford in 1989 and composed and directed the score for Gabriele Retes' Bienvenido-Welcome in 1994, winning Mexico's 1995 ARIEL award. He can also be heard in Bill Conti's By the Sword score and acted in Taylor Hackford's Bound by Honor. In 1992 he performed a globally telecast appearance in the United Nations General Assembly Hall with the National Orchestra of Spain conducted by Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos.

Interestingly, in 2000 he was presented the Grand Cross of Isabel la Catolica and knighted for his musical accomplishments by his native country he fled with his family in 1957, during Francisco Franco's dictatorship. He received the Recording Academy President’s Merit Award in 2007 by the Recording Academy.

Angel Romero has a daughter Celina, a son in law John, and four grandchildren - Kate, Riley, Anna, and Jackie.

Wow this was amazing, and pretty interesting. I am a classical guitarist and learnt asturias when I was 13 years old. It has been 10 years and I havent mastered the song as Angel does (even playing it almost every day, because I love the song). This was amazing because he plays some parts of the song in a different way. Sounds almost the same but his arrangements are better and easier to play! I will study this video... see if I can improve the song :)

This is a fantastic performance. There are a few errors here and there. I couldn't imagine myself ever having the ability to play this well, though. Give the Xuefei Yang version a view. You won't regret it!

Excellent version and I agree Anna's is worth seeing and hearing, it will be awesome to hear her play 20 years from now (check the 1975 John Williams version comparing it to a recent one and you'll see what I mean)

He plays awesome and fast, and touchy. But I think he takes breaks at the difficult transitions. And he makes some minor mistakes in several places. The best version I have seen is Ana Vidovic's.

A large proportion of the famous heavy metal guitarists were trained in classical guitar. A few that come to mind are Dave Mustaine, Kirk Hammet, and the guys from Evergrey (I think).

Of course they are not trying to impress anybody, with either technique or interpretation.
But I have heard Pepe (Concierto Andaluz that was written by Rodrigo especially for the Romeros) and Angel in a solo concert.
When you hear the best, it is only natural to be impressed and to praise them (I did not compare them with anybody else).
So please, do not be a reverse snob and pretend that listening to your high school youth orchestra is comparable to listening to the Concertgebouw (for example).
Similarly, do not pretend that eating at a great restaurant is not more enjoyable than eating at McDonald's, and commending the chef of the former might be a nice gesture.
After all, both serve edible food which serves the same purpose and ends in the same place

that is called an 'arpeggio'. playing the notes of a chord individually rather than at one time. and, in this case, at world-class speed!

Watched it... this one is in my opinion much better, a more organic flow to the song, compared to the much too even tempo of Vidovic's interpretation. But they're all top notch guitarists nonetheless.

@RootsinBrooklyn I completely agree with you on this. God only knows how many interpretations I have heard of this over the years and I can't even decide which one I like the best. There are things I like and dislike about each. But if I had to "guess" at which I like the best I think it would be one Carlos Bonell did about 20 years ago.

No sorry, he's right. Mistakes sometimes happen, Although he got it wrong once it was still a great performance. Art is perfectionist but it should not be evaluated only through it's perfectionism, and also through it's intention. He got the right pitch, dynamics and tempo, and the right emotion. Tolerance and pacience are ethical values which should always be present in any human evaluation of other people's actions, and I can see neither in art nor in other people's comments you are tolerant.

On the sheet music for this piece, when the B major chord is played you have a choice to play i really fast tremolo on the B string or play the open B and the high B alternating. The first is labelled as easier exectution and i havent found a video of anyone who doesnt do this, i dont understand why...

Yes, it is an unfortunate side affect of the way this was recorded. It may very well be a radio station being picked up by the recording equipment. I've heard radiio stations from toasters and heard tell that in the early days of radio, they would blast the signal out with such force that the broadcast could be heard on some metal fences.

For a single finger mode, I find m to be preferable, but in the true spirit of tremolo, two or more alternating fingers are the way to go in my opinion :) There comes a point (in terms of pace) where you have little choice anyway.

An arpeggio is the parts of a chord and played in sequences. It's like playing a scale, but using parts of a chord, in many ways it's superior to playing scales.

I don't agree. I just watched her (Moretti) version. Actually, if I play like her, I can play this piece without mistakes, too. She slows down frequently to play the difficult parts. For example, the section that starts at 0:26 after hitting open E(6) she slows down each time and continues. The same when she strums the barre chords. I've been working for two years just to make those passages without slowing down. If I stop like her, I can play this without mistake too.

No one agrees on this one. :) I like Filomena Moretti's version best. (Moretti recital no. 7). I have an MP3 of her that's even better than what's one YouTube. Emmanuel Rossfelder does pretty well with this one, too.
