Last Night Another Soldier
Angelic Upstarts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Last night another soldier, last night another child
No one seems to worry, no one sees his mother cry

Can you see that smart, clean soldier,
Standing straight and oh so proud
He wants to fight for Queen and country
He wants to make his family proud
A job with the future, his way to get out of it
It's his sense of romance, it never ends that way
Last night another soldier, last night another child
No one seems to worry, no one sees his mother cry

They're just facts and figures on your TV screen
Another child and another soldier, is peace just a dream

In the country strange and foreign all the people resent him
He can't cope with his problems, all the fears and hatred

Now he wish he never went he wish he never thought of it
It's not the same as fighting armies looking for the terrorists

They're just facts and figures

Can you hear the mocking laughter from the ones that gain by it
They're not in line for the bullets, they're the ones who started it

They're just facts and figures

Last night another soldier, last night another child
Just a number in the papers, another one of the innocent

They're just facts and figures

Overall Meaning

In their song Last Night Another Soldier, Angelic Upstarts explore the toll of war on families and soldiers. The opening line "Last night another soldier, last night another child" highlights the senseless loss of life that occurs in war. The second line "No one seems to worry, no one sees his mother cry" speaks to the indifference of those who have not directly faced the horrors of war. The soldier who wants to make his family proud and fight for his country is romanticized in the lyric "He wants to fight for Queen and country". However, the reality for many soldiers is not what they envision. The lyric "In the country strange and foreign all the people resent him" highlights the isolation and hostility soldiers can face when they are deployed. Additionally, the line "Now he wish he never went he wish he never thought of it" speaks to the regret that some soldiers feel after experiencing the traumas of war. The closing repetition of "They're just facts and figures" further emphasizes the dehumanization of soldiers and civilians that can occur during times of war.

Simply one of the best punk songs. Although Angelic Upstarts wrote and performed many really good songs this one is the stand out, a genuine classic.
Yesterday punk lost one of it's greatest warriors.
