Everest
Ani DiFranco [Live] Lyrics

to the height of everest
and still the world is smoother
than a shiny ball-bearing
so i take a few steps back
and put on a wider lens
and it changes your skin,
your sex, and what your wearing
to be a lot like mine
like a sphere is a sphere
and all of us here
have been here all the time
you brought me to church,
cinder blocks, flourescent light
you brought me to church
at 7o'clock on a sunday night
and the band was rocking
and the floors were scrubbed clean
and everybody had a tambourine
so i took a deep breath and became
the white girl with the hair
and you sat right beside me
while everybody stared
and through the open window
i think the singing went outside
and floated up to tell
all the stars not to hide
'cause by the time church let out
the sky was much clearer
and the moon was so beautiful,
that the ocean held up a mirror
as we walked home we spoke slowly
we spoke slow,
and we spoke lowly
like it was taking more time
than usual to choose
the words to go
with your squeaky sandle shoes
like time is not a thing
that's ours to lose
from the height of the pacific
to the depths of everest
The song "Everest" by Ani DiFranco begins by describing the vastness of the world between the depths of the Pacific to the heights of Everest, and yet how small and smooth it seems like a shiny ball-bearing from a distance. Ani then takes a few steps back to see the bigger picture and how we are all connected, with our differences of skin color or gender becoming less significant. She then sings about a profound experience she had in a church one Sunday night with someone special. The band was rocking, and the floors were scrubbed clean. It seemed like everyone had a tambourine. As she took a deep breath, she became fully present and felt connected to those around her. They sang so beautifully that it felt like the singing went outside and floated up to tell the stars not to hide. As they walked home after church, she felt like time was not theirs to lose, and they spoke slowly and lowly, trying to choose the right words.
The song talks about connection and how we are all intertwined, despite our differences. Ani DiFranco uses vivid imagery to describe the experience of feeling connected to something greater than oneself. The image of the smooth, shiny ball-bearing represents the world as a whole, but from a distance. When one takes a step back and sees things from a wider perspective, it all seems interconnected. The church experience reminds the listener of the power of music to move and connect people. It is a reminder that no matter how different we may seem, we are all connected by a shared humanity.

In the end of the song where she switches to "the height of the pacific to the depths of Everest" I got the impression she was referring to the mirrored image of the ocean holding up a mirror , "the moon was so beautiful that the ocean held up a mirror...", not that the optimism of the song had been reversed or taken away. But that's just my interpretation of it.
