"Political Journalist" isn't a credential we usually have in musician's bios, but this is exactly what Anika was doing while living between Berlin and Bristol earlier this year when she met Geoff Barrow. The producer was looking for a new singer to work with his band Beak>, and it was immediately clear they shared the same musical vision, including a love of punk, dub and 60s girl groups.
Just a week later Anika and Beak> (Barrow, Billy Fuller and Matt Williams) went into the studio to begin recording material. The resulting album was recorded in twelve days, live, with the four together in one room. Dub with no overdubs. The collaboration is political, trashy, dub, punk, funk ... a cohesive sound, and and experience in uneasy listening.
In the tradition of short-lived but deeply influential 99 Records and the NYC's 80s No Wave nexus, the nine songs on Anika run the gamut from experimental rock ("Yang Yang", "Officer Officer") to covers of folk ("Masters of War") and pop songs ("Terry", "I Go to Sleep"), while showcasing reverb-drenched ancient drum machine rhythms.
The album will be released by Beak's label Invada in Europe, and in USA & Japan by Stones Throw.

the song sounds exactly like what grief feels like, for people that have passed on and for people that are still here but no longer in your life. this is what makes it so timeless and haunting- loss is a universal experience, so we can all relate to it. that's what you need to do to create something that lasts forever; touch on the common (often mysterious) themes of life that we all know too well. this and the original version of this song both hit the nail on the head describing this experience with music. forever relevant

It's tough but the relationship we have with pets is super special- they will only live for a fraction of our lives but we can provide a loving home to them for their entire lives, and that's what's important. they are a gift in so many ways. Bless you, the painful part will fade away eventually and be replaced with happy memories. take care of yourself, eat and sleep well, and do whatever you need to do x

This song came to me at a time when I was mourning the death of my cat. To some people they may not understand and undermine the power that love has between person and companion animals. I adopted him elderly so we only had 5 years together but he was the closest thing I’ve ever come close to falling in love with. I’ve never been so close to a single soul. He’d sleep next to me and he would literally be attached to me constantly for the last few months of his life. I’d rock him in my arms and sing to him as he’d fall asleep on my shoulder. He loved food and was such a messy eater, he lost some teeth and would get the food everywhere so twice a day I’d have to wipe his face with a warm rag. It was so hard to let go of him and leave him behind, I obviously still haven’t. 💔
