Flesh Canoe
Animal Collective Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Young red bird they're just natural feelings
I can't keep from changing my brains
Bending my wants with my rights
Are my friends still half right
And should I keep them separate from me
Its unclear then I get a cold
Can I get a light
There's a certain type of easy pace
That's what we need to make it

Come in close I trust you your nose dipped in my sweat
It dripped on your beautiful sweater kind of nice
Should I really lie with you I never know when I'm on my own
Are there more important things to do
Then kiss or sleep today we gotta wake up

Then I talk to your breath and we enjoy the air
And I creep on your chest to the hut I have
Where I pluck a few notes on the strands of your hair
And I'm singing to you what to do
If id ask you to make funny faces with me in the mirror of the bathroom

Know your next you make me feel alright
Are you just like me never gonna pick one kind of fruit
Like a mushed banana on your tooth
And you like the sting of the cherry juice
Never eat an apple that's just one color

Young red bird they're just natural feelings
Like walking off to ride my bike or just bump into you
I haven't seen you in a week or three days
Though it really bugs me
Its nice to find new ways to smile
I keep thinking that when you feel sad you can't pout

'Cause what this songs about is me singing
I'm just wondering what to do with you myself and me naked in the mirror of the bathroom

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Animal Collective's song "Flesh Canoe" delve into the complexities of human relationships and the struggles with self-identity. In the opening lines, the singer acknowledges the natural feelings they experience but admits to an inability to control the changes that take place within their own brain. They question the relationship between their wants and rights, wondering if they should separate their friends from themselves. As the song progresses, the singer reflects on their physical intimacy with another person, expressing uncertainty about whether they should continue to lie with them or if there are more important things to do.

The chorus provides some clarity as the singer highlights the importance of a slower pace, possibly referring to the desire to take things slower in a relationship or slow down the frenetic pace of life. The song ends with the singer contemplating their own self-image, expressing a desire to find new ways to smile and acknowledging that the song is about wondering what to do when faced with vulnerability and intimacy with another person.

Avey Tare is so great to watch. everything he performs, you can just tell it's coming from somewhere deep inside him. one of the best songwriters of the last 20 years

Totally agree with you that their lyrics are awesome but I think that what they're going for when they "mask" their lyrics is actually making it so that the vocals aren't a foreign instrument in the music. They create an amazing atmosphere in their music and every little thing that they do just belongs there. Its like their music comes from a foreign universe and their vocals are denizens of that universe, foreign to us but natural to the music.

I've watched this video so many times. I love how much Dave feels his music. This song is breathing.

sleepy weepy

No words can express the memories and energy that comes along with this song

This song is amazing. Wow. I just found out about these guys, and I must say. They are great. This song is so amazing.

Baz Buco

yeah exactly. personally, the aesthetic of their music is so obscure to me that it IS difficult for me to like them. but i read the lyrics and it's great poetry. AMAZING poetry. but i crave a more guided, purposeful aesthetic. i would only find this amazing if i were blazed out of my shoes.

TheMasquerader

But it's oh so wonderful discovering the lyrics slowly. A brand new kick in the chest from a song you've known for ages. ^_^

Patrick Killingsworth

They are such an incredibly rewarding band!

I can't thank you enough for uploading the vids from this set. The rendition of Purple Bottle in particular was a real punch in the balls...just stunning.
