Prince of Egypt: When You Believe
Animation Soundtrack Ensemble Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Many nights we've prayed
With no proof anyone could hear
In our hearts, a hopeful song
We barely understood

Now we are not afraid
Although we know there's much to fear
We were moving mountains long
Before we knew we could

There can be miracles when you believe
Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill
Who knows what miracles you can achieve
When you believe, somehow you will
You will when you believe

In this time of fear
When prayer so often proves in vain
Hope seems like the summer birds
Too swiftly flown away
And now I'm standing here
My heart's so full, I can't explain
Seeking faith and speaking words
I'd never thought I'd say

There can be miracles when you believe
Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill
Who knows what miracles you can achieve
When you believe, somehow you will
You will when you believe
There can be miracles when you believe
Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill
Who knows what miracles you can achieve
When you believe, somehow you will

Somehow you will
You will when you believe

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song "When You Believe" from the movie Prince of Egypt describe the power of hope and faith, even in the face of adversity. The song acknowledges that life can be challenging and that there are times when we may feel helpless, but the message is clear that if we believe in something greater than ourselves, we have the power to achieve miracles. The lyrics touch upon themes of prayer, hope, and faith and remind us that miracles are possible if we keep believing even when it feels like all hope is lost.

The song is not only inspirational, it is also a powerful example of musical storytelling. The lyrics tell a story of two characters, Moses and Miriam, who were facing an overwhelming challenge but were able to overcome it through their faith. The lyrics also show how their journey taught them to be strong and believe in their abilities even when the odds seemed to be against them.

Overall, "When You Believe" is a beautiful and introspective song that encourages listeners to have faith and believe in the impossible. It reminds us that even when things seem bleak, we can and should hold onto hope and keep moving forward.

Many nights we prayed
With no proof, anyone could hear
In our hearts a hopeful song
We barely understood
Now, we are not afraid
Although we know there's much to fear
We were moving mountains
Long before we knew we could, ooh-oh, yes
There can be miracles
When you believe

Who knows what miracles you can achieve?
When you believe, somehow you will
You will when you believe
Oh-oh-oh
Mmm, yeah
In this time of fear
When prayer so often proves in vain
Hope seems like the summer bird
Too swiftly flown away
Yet now I'm standing here
My hearts so full, I can't explain
Seeking faith and speakin' words
I never thought I'd say
There can be miracles
When you believe (When you believe)
Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill (Mmm)
Who knows what miracles you can achieve? (You can achieve)
When you believe, somehow you will
You will when you believe
They don't always happen when you ask
And it's easy to give in to your fears
But when you're blinded by your pain
Can't see your way clear through the rain
A small but still, resilient voice
Says, "Help is very near", oh (Oh)
There can be miracles (Miracles)
When you believe (Boy, when you believe, yeah)
Though hope is frail
It's hard to kill (Hard to kill, oh, yeah)
Who knows what miracles
You can achieve (You can achieve, oh)
When you believe somehow you will (Somehow, somehow, somehow)
Now, you will (I know, I know, know)
You will when you (When you)
Believe
You will when you (You will when you)
Believe
Just believe (Believe)
Just believe
You will when you
Believe

The lady who sang Ashira had such a clear voice, that even after the chorus joined in her voice was still so clearly present despite putting the microphone down! Amazing!!!!!

@MrCr86

But her Hebrew pronunciation it terrible

@marisolmtzm

@MrCr86 could you tell us a bit more about the mistakes you hear and what the right pronunciation should be? I'd love to be able to sing it properly :)

@MrCr86

@Marisol Mtz I am not a dialect, so it hard for me to explain. In Hebrew there are throat syllables , she pronounce the wrong one.

@bluekiss2572

@Marisol Mtz You sang it perfectly, he is not even able to tell how to pronounce smh 🤦‍♀️

@Rob-fn1kp

anyone know the translation of the hebrew part?

The ashira part is supposed to represent the sounds of children playing more that they're freed. So it really is supposed to be a joyful part. So it makes me really happy when the whole chorus stands up to sing it together, and everyone had the biggest smiles on their faces. Even those not singing that part!

@fairygodmother127

It was so cute

@maximgandalf

Absolutely!!!

@Sigmalove84

I named my daughter Ashira. I’ve always loved this movie, this song, and the soundtrack. So powerful and beautiful. This performance gave me tears.
