Lost in Music
Anita Lane [Nick Cave plays organ] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're lost in music
Caught in a trap
There's no turning back
We're lost in music

We're lost in music
I feel so alive
I quit my 9 to 5
We're lost in music

Have you ever seen
Some people who's everything
Fits the girl with their mind
Responsibility, to me, it's a tragedy
I'll get a job some other time

I wanna join a band,
Play in front of crazy fans
Yes, call that temptation
Give me the melody
That's all that I'll ever need
The music is my salvation

We're lost in music
Caught in a trap
There's no turning back
We're lost in music

We're lost in music
I feel so alive
I quit my 9 to 5
We're lost in music

In the spotlight
The band gets so very tight
Each and every nite
It's their vanity
To me it's my sanity
I could never survive

Some people ask me
What are ya gonna be?
What don't you go get a job?
All that I can say
I won't give up my music
I mean not now, later

We're lost in music
Caught in a trap
There's no turning back
We're lost in music

We're lost in music
I feel so alive
I quit my 9 to 5
We're lost in music

We're lost in music
Caught in a trap
There's no turning back
We're lost in music

We're lost in music
I feel so alive
I quit my 9 to 5
We're lost in music

We're lost in music
Caught in a trap
There's no turning back
We're lost in music

We're lost in music

The lyrics to Anita Lane's Lost in Music song describe the feeling of being completely consumed by one's love for music. The repetition of the phrase "lost in music" emphasizes the hypnotic power of music as the singer and those around her become trapped by its spell. The lines "I feel so alive, I quit my 9 to 5" reflect the idea that music has the power to release a person from daily life’s struggles and transform them into a state of ecstasy. The final lines of the song suggest that the singer repels the conventional idea of success and stability through a conventional job, and instead, craving the intoxicating rush of creativity.

The song seems to be a tribute to the escapist nature of music and how it can help individuals break free from the anxiety and stress of everyday life. Credits are all off on this. Unless noted otherwise, Mick Harvey played all instruments on this version, and he's doing back-up vocals here. Thomas Wydler was not involved. On this track, Barry played bass (as if you didn't recognize that sound) and Nick on organ. Sorry, just wanted to clarify. Oh, and this was released on a 4-song e.p. back in 1988 as "Dirty Sings", then on a compilation full length of Anita's scattered material in 1993 as "Dirty Pearl". Well worth picking up if you find it.

I'd been afraid to listen to this for a long time because I was afraid it'd be campy. But tonight [20 November 2019], I broke down and listened to it for the first time. It isn't campy. It IS a work of genius. Anita sounds incredible: so tough and sharp and...well it must be said...dirty. And the instrumentation is gorgeous. There's just one thing that disappoints me: when I read the lyrics, I realized Anita was singing, "I wanna join a band,/Play in front of crazy fans ...", but when I first heard the song (before I read the lyrics), I thought she was singing "I want to join a band,/ Play like a crazy man ..." or maybe "Play WITH a crazy man." And I can't help thinking that, if she'd sang that, it would have been more a propos . After all, Anita knew from crazy men. She was (briefly) a member of the Birthday Party: she'd been singing and writing songs with a bunch of guys who were pretty (drugged-out) crazy. You know what I mean?
