Even at a very young age she was already performing. Her first big hit came in 1976, when she released her début song The Alternative Way together with Hans Vermeulen. The record reaches the 1st place in the charts and also her next songs will become a huge success.
Slowly her success descents and she changes record label in 1980. There she gets a fresh new group of people to guide her and there her third single Why Tell Me Why (1981) dominates position 1 in the charts for weeks and it became the best sold record of that year in The Netherlands. This is the true beginning of a booming music career.
In 1983 she performs for the first time with Lee Towers. The record sales diminish slightly in the next period, but in 1986 she records the chart breaker Run To Me with Lee Towers. This will also be her last Top 10 hit in The Netherlands. Still, her albums and concert tickets sell very well. By the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s she performs several times in the completely sold out Ahoy' (a huge concert hall in the city of Rotterdam).
In 2005 she's back in the spotlights by appearing as a team captain in the tv show Het Gevoel Van. In May 2006 she's on stage at the big musical event of Musicals in Ahoy'. Later she will appear as Grizabella in the Dutch version of the musical Cats. Of the five actresses who play this part, she gets to play in the première.
In 2008 she does a series of guest performances for the Luchtmachtkapel in the concert series Hollywood In Concert. She did this together with Lee Towers.
Everybody's Talkin'
Anita Meyer Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I don't hear a word they're saying
Only the echoes of my mind
People stopping staring
I can't see their faces
Only the shadows of their eyes
Thru' the pouring rain
Going where the weather suits my clothes
Backing off of the North East wind
Sailing on summer breeze
And skipping over the ocean like a stone
I'm goin' where the sun keeps shinin'
Thru the pourin' rain,
Goin' where the weather suits my clothes.
Backing off the North East wind,
Sailing on a summer breeze,
Skipping over the ocean like a stone
Everybody's talking at me.
The lyrics to Anita Meyer's song Everybody's Talkin’ describe a person who feels isolated and overwhelmed by the constant chatter of others. The singer cannot hear what others are saying because their own thoughts and worries are echoing in their mind. The disconnection is further emphasized by the line, "I can't see their faces, only the shadows of their eyes." The singer is so preoccupied with their own concerns that they cannot fully engage with the world around them. They are seeking an escape from this overwhelming chatter and are looking for a place where they can be at peace. This is where the lines, "I'm going where the sun keeps shining, through the pouring rain, going where the weather suits my clothes," come in.
The chorus describes the desire to escape to a place where the weather is suited to their clothing - signifying the fact that they are looking for an environment that is in harmony with their inner state. The singer is tired of battling against the "North East wind" and seeks to embrace the "summer breeze" and the freedom and lightness that it provides. The line "skipping over the ocean like a stone" suggests a sense of carefree ease, as if the singer is throwing off their burdens and embracing a new, more peaceful state of mind.
Overall, Anita Meyer's song Everybody's Talkin’ portrays a person who feels overwhelmed by constant noise and voices and is searching for a way to find inner peace and freedom.
