True
Anka (Paul) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So true funny how it seems
Always in time, but never in line for dreams
Head over heels when toe to toe
This is the sound of my soul,
This is the sound
I bought a ticket to the world
But now I've come back again
Why do I find it hard to write the next line?
Oh, I want the truth to be said

Huh, huh, huh, huh-uh, huh
I know this much is true
Huh, huh, huh, huh-uh, huh
I know this much is true

With a thrill in my head and a pill on my tongue
Dissolve the nerves that have just begun
Listening to Marvin (all night long)
This is the sound of my soul
This is the sound

Always slipping from my hands
Sand's a time of its own
Take your seaside arms and write the next line
Oh, I want the truth to be known

Huh, huh, huh, huh-uh, huh
I know this much is true
Huh, huh, huh, huh-uh, huh
I know this much is true

I bought a ticket to the world
But now I've come back again
Why do I find it hard to write the next line?
Oh I want the truth to be said

Huh, huh, huh, huh-uh, huh
I know this much is true
Huh, huh, huh, huh-uh, huh
I know this much is true

This much is true
I know, I know, I know this much is true

Overall Meaning

Anka (Paul)'s song True is primarily about one's search for truth and authenticity in a world that seems to be full of illusions and facades. The first stanza speaks about how time and dreams are never in line, hence the irony that we are always on time but never quite where we are meant to be. The second stanza talks about how we can get caught up in drugs and music, numbing ourselves to the present and avoiding the search for truth. The pre-chorus speaks about how truth always seems to slip through our fingers, like sand slipping from our hands. The chorus repeats multiple times the phrase "I know this much is true," which is the only thing the singer seems to be certain of in this world.

The third stanza repeats the first stanza almost word for word, emphasizing the cyclical nature of this search for truth. The fourth stanza calls for action, for us to take our "seaside arms" and write the next line of our story, to search for what is real and true. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, as if to solidify the singer's resilience in the search for truth.

Paul Anka's ROCK SWINGS album is pretty freakin great...he plays it straight and, like the supreme pro he is, he serves up a dynamic set of contemporary "rock" covers with great emotion, and respect and, they are very well played and arranged (by an orchestra made up of serious players) to accompany Anka's outstanding voice and command while, (phenomenally) still maintaining both his vocal quality and range at this point in his career.

Dynamics in spades throughout

I must have been sleeping in 2005 when he released this album and played an assortment of songs from the album on his promotional and concert tours during that time.
