mi piace, è bello bello,
vo'andare in Porta Rossa
a comperar l'anello!
Si, si, ci voglio andare!
E se l'amassi indarno,
andrei sul Ponte Vecchio
ma per buttarmi in Arno!
O Dio! Vorrei morir!
Babbo, pietà, pietà!
Babbo, pietà, pietà!
The lyrics of Ann-Mette Elten's "O Mio Babbino Caro" are a compelling and emotional plea from a young woman to her father. The song begins with the woman expressing her love for her father and how much she wants to please him, stating "O mio babbino caro, mi piace, è bello bello" (Oh my dear father, I like him, he is handsome). She continues to say that she wants to go to Porta Rossa to buy a ring, displaying her desire to give herself to the man she loves with her father's permission.

Si, si, ci voglio andare!
Yes, yes, I want to go there!
E se l'amassi indarno,
And if my love is in vain,
andrei sul Ponte Vecchio
I'd go to Ponte Vecchio
ma per buttarmi in Arno!
but to throw myself in Arno!
Mi struggo e mi tormento,
I am anguished and tormented,
O Dio! Vorrei morir!
Oh God! I would like to die!
