has developed a reputation as an intense performer and firebrand songwriter.
Her debut album ‘Poor Horse’ was voted into the Hotpress musicians' poll of Ireland's top
100 albums ever, while her second album We're Smiling has met with hearty critical acclaim
and a growing number of fresh converts.
Experimenting with unusual melodies, ideas and lyrics, Scott's musical armoury consists of a
range of left-field guitars, newfangled synths, detuned mandolas and some quirky ideas on how
to go about playing them.
A prolific writer and busy performer, Scott has shared the stage with artists as diverse as
Blondie and Fairport Convention, slogging hard on the live circuit between Ireland and the UK.
As a vocalist she is in frequent demand, during the past year alone singing on records for
Kila, David Kitt and Mark Geary, with whom she dueted for movies such as Loggerheads and Steel
City.
In 2005 her electronic collaboration for the Earsugar Jukebox Label under the guise of
Cracklebox received a gracious welcome in the UK garnering plays and praise on XFM, BBC1
and BBC 6.
Scott’s trump card however lies undoubtedly in her own work and in her instantly identifiable
voice. With this her second album, her own independent label, and the growing acclaim of fans
and peers alike, Scott continues to redefine and challenge herself as one of Ireland's most
original creative voices.
Joy
Ann Scott Lyrics

I seen the fire burn in your eyes
Where they carry you all that I would do
But sing ur song if it brings you
Joy, joy, joy, joy, joy
Joy, joy, joy, joy, joy
Joy, joy, joy, joy, joy
Between us we have a silent deal
Mercury, we will never need
If solitude wasn't there for you
No voices I don't hear you
Sing joy, joy, joy, joy, joy
Sing joy, joy, joy, joy, joy
Sing joy, joy, joy, joy, joy
Sing joy, joy, joy, joy, joy
Give it back to me, it's the drug I need
Strong enough for two, everything for you
Joy, joy, joy, joy, joy
Joy, joy, joy, joy, joy
Joy, joy, joy, joy, joy
Joy, joy, joy, joy, joy
The song "Joy" by Ann Scott speaks to the power of music and the tranquility it can bring to someone's life. The opening lyric, "Most of my terrors, I’ve seen the fire burn in your eyes", suggests that the singer's fears and anxieties are deeply entwined with the emotions of a loved one. The use of fire is particularly interesting, as it can represent both passion and destruction, highlighting the intense nature of the relationship.
The second verse, "Between us we have a silent deal, Mercury we will never need", suggests a unique and specific relationship between the two individuals. The reference to Mercury potentially alludes to the Roman God of communication, suggesting that the relationship functions almost telepathically, without the need for spoken communication. This is further emphasized by the line "If solitude wasn't there for you, no voices I don't hear you", implying that the singer can sense what the other person needs without words.
The song's chorus is a repetition of the word "joy" four times, emphasizing the power of this emotion and the potency of music to provoke it. The final lyric "Give it back to me, it's the drug I need, strong enough for two, everything for you" suggests that this sense of joy and music is both a shared and individual experience. The singer needs music in order to feel fulfilled and content, and they are willing to do anything to bring it to themselves and others.
