Benjamin
Anna Depenbusch Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Benjamin von nebenan und ich
wir waren irgendwann mal
unzertrennlich
Doch was da war
das war vergänglich
Unsere Geschichte ist wirklich
schnellerzählt
Ich kam spät nach Haus
und hatte Pizza bestellt
und im Flur um Punkt acht Uhr
hat er sich mir dann vorgestellt

Er sei neu in der Stadt
wohnt erst seit gestern hier neben mir
Wir haben Kisten ausgepackt
und die Nacht zusammen gesessen
und Pizza gegessen

Das alles ist nun auch
schon Wochen her
erst waren wir verliebt
und dann doch nicht mehr
Es kam vom Alltagswahn
dass wir uns mit anderen Augen sahen
Ich find 's nicht schlimm
dass wir noch Nachbarn sind
Ist sogar praktisch
wenn ich im Urlaub bin
für die Post und die Blumen
und den Zeitungsjungen
Doch eins raubt mir
noch den Verstand
Ich höre seinen Besuch
nachts durch die Wand

Benjamin

Und was kann ich jetzt
bitte schön dafür
Ich kann nicht schlafen
wenn ich die beiden hör
Wer hat denn dieses Haus
aus Pappmaschee gebaut
Ich mein es ist ja schön
wenn man sich liebt
aber auch ziemlich blöd
wenn man daneben liegt
Darum geht ich raus auf den Balkon
und schlaf auf Beton
Denn die Nacht ist sternenklar
und einfach wunderbar
Und das dacht sich auch nebenan
das Liebespaar

Benjamin

Jan

Overall Meaning

In Anna Depenbusch's song "Benjamin", the singer begins by reminiscing about an old friendship with Benjamin, who used to live next door. They were inseparable at one point, but their relationship was short-lived. One day, the singer ordered pizza and met Benjamin in the hallway of their building. Benjamin had just moved in and they spent the night unpacking boxes and eating pizza.

However, their love affair didn't last long due to the pressures of daily life. Despite the fact that they are no longer together, they remain neighbors and the singer finds it convenient to have someone to pick up mail and water plants while they're on holiday. The only issue is that they can hear Benjamin's new lover through the thin walls, and it's keeping the singer up at night. In a symbolic move, the singer decides to sleep outside on the balcony, admiring the beauty of the starry night sky while listening to the sounds of Jan, Benjamin's new lover, next door.

Here's my translation:

Benjamin from next door and me,
at one point we were inseparable,
but that was all a fleeting thing.
There is not really much to tell about our story.
I had come home late and just ordered pizza.
In the hall at eight o’clock, he introduced himself.

He was new here in town,
had just moved in yesterday - next to me.
So we unpacked his boxes
and sat together that night and ate pizza.

All that was already some weeks ago.
At first we were in love and then we weren’t.
It came from the common delusion
that we saw with each other’s eyes.
I find it’s not bad that we are still neighbors.
It’s even practical when I’m on holiday,
for the mail and the flowers and the newspaper boy.
No one’s robbed me, and yet I mind.
I hear when he visits at night through the wall.

Benjamin.

What can I do now? Tell them ‘you’re welcome’ ?
I can’t even sleep when I hear those two there.
Who was it made this house out of papier-mache?
I mean, yes, it is great when you’re in love,
but pretty stupid just lying beside it.
So I take myself out to the terrace
and sleep on concrete where the night is so starry
and it’s all just so wonderful -
like the thought of the loving couple next door.

Benjamin.

All that was already some weeks ago.
At first they were in love, but then they weren’t.
It came from the common delusion
that they saw with each other’s eyes.
Now the wall next door is silent
and here with me, for some days, lies
a new young man and his name’s

Jan.

Your translation is wrong. You have a german name, but are you German?

1. No one’s robbed me, and yet I mind.
2. I hear when he visits at night through the wall.

->1: Den Verstand rauben = to drive sb. out of their mind
("rauben" is "to robb" in english, but there is a phrase in german, that when you translate it literally, it is "he/she/it is robbing my mind", of cause you don't say it this way in English.)

->2: Sein Besuch = his visitors/guests (It can be translated as "his visit", but not in this case. In this case, not he is visiting someone. He is the one receiving a visit every night here).

So, correct is:
- but there's one thing that once will drive me out of my mind.
- [and that is that] I can hear his guests through the wall.

Benjamin obviously has a female guest, a lady which stays over night, spending the night with him and the guest is faking an organsm and Anna can hear this through the wall, which is why she is singing:

Ben- ja - ja! ja! oh, Ja! Oh, Benjamin!

(It is obvious, but I'll explain it to you: she is playing with the fact that Benjamin includes the german exclamation "ja!" (yes/yeah!))
