We Are
Anna Johnson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

See the devil on the doorstep now (my oh my)
Telling everybody oh just how to live their lives
Sliding down the information highway
Buying in just like a bunch of fools
Time is ticking and we can't go back (my oh my)

What about the world today
What about the place that we call home
We've never been so many
And we've never been so alone

(Chorus)
You keep watching from your picket fence
You keep talking but it makes no sense
You say we're not responsible
But we are, we are
You wash your hands and come out clean
Fail to recognise the enemies within
You say we're not responsible
But we are, we are, we are, we are

One step forward making two steps back (my oh my)
Riding piggy on the bad boys back for life
Lining up for the grand illusion
No answers for no questions asked
Lining up for the execution
Without knowing why

(Chorus)
You keep watching from your picket fence
You keep talking but it makes no sense
You say we're not responsible
But we are, we are
You wash your hands and come out clean
Fail to recognise the enemies within
You say we're not responsible
But we are, we are, we are, we are

It's all about power then
Take control
Breaking the rule
Breaking the soul
They suck us dry till there's nothing left
My oh my, my oh my

What about the world today
What about the place that we call home
We' ve never been so many
And we've never been so alone.... so alone

(Chorus)
You keep watching from your picket fence
You keep talking but it makes no sense
You say we're not responsible
But we are, we are
You wash your hands and come out clean
Fail to recognise the enemies within
You say we're not responsible
But we are, we are, we are, we are

It's all about power then (we are)
Take control (we are)
Breaking the rule (we are, we are)
Breaking the soul (we are)
They suck us dry till there's nothing left (we are, we are)
My oh my, my oh my

We are
We are (ïts all )
We are
We are, we are (take control)
We are
We are

It's all about power
Then take control

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Anna Johnson's song We Are is a commentary on society's current state of mind - one of self-denial and hesitance to take responsibility for our actions. The opening line "See the devil on the doorstep now (my oh my)" is suggestive of the nameless, faceless entity that is guiding us towards self-destruction, masked by our social constructs.

The song talks about the information age we are living in today, where we are surrounded by a plethora of information from every corner of the world. However, instead of using this information to make informed decisions for the betterment of society, we have become a society blinded by fads and trends, who fail to recognize the real problems in the world. Instead, we have become a society that blindly follows false promises, and we find ourselves "sliding down the information highway, buying in just like a bunch of fools".

The main message that Anna Johnson is trying to convey through this song is that we must take responsibility for our actions, as it is in no one else's hands but ours. The chorus emphasizes this as she states, "You say we're not responsible, but we are, we are". It's a call to action for the current generation to rise up and take responsibility and make changes for the betterment of society.

@RenneAtha

Lol exactly! But also how we look around the world in its current state and we're all like, whoa, other countries/the government/other people have messed up and it's all their fault. And we don't realise that we're responsible too.

@narashikamaru0

@@RenneAtha yes u r totally true , every small bad action will reflect no matter what , butterfly effect tho
