The Wind
Anna Maria Jopek Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The sky turns grey and fades to dark
The leaf hangs in mid air
An open window lets in the cold
Time stands like a century (I feel you)

There's nothing left but everything remains
To remind me I miss you
And everything I see and touch is tainted
And it turns to dust

Who plays your voice to me
Who strings it on the breeze
If I could just believe
But it's nothing just the wind

If I put it in a hidden place
An image in my mind
The window may close some more each day
And then time might keep on moving

Who plays your voice to me
Who strings it on the breeze
If I could just believe
But it's nothing just the wind

Who plays your voice to me
Who strings it on the breeze
If I could just believe
But it's nothing just the wind

Who steals these falling tears
Who heals the aching years
I thought I heard you speak
It's nothing just the wind

Who steals these falling tears
Who heals the aching years

I thought I heard you speak
It's nothing just the wind

Overall Meaning

The Wind by Anna Maria Jopek begins with an imagery of a world that is desolate and dreary. The sky is grey and turns darker, the leaves are suspended in the air, and a chill blows in from an open window. Everything around her reminds her of the one she misses. Time feels like it has stopped, and every moment without her loved one seems like an eternity. She clings to her memories of him, but even the things that she sees and touches become darkened by the absence of her loved one.

The song's chorus repeats the same lines, "Who plays your voice to me, who strings it on the breeze?" as the singer wonders where the voice of her loved one is coming from. The wind whispers to her, seemingly as a response to her inquiries, but she wants to believe that it is him speaking to her. She toys with the idea of finding a place to hide her memories to help move on from her loved one, but as the chorus suggests, everything falls short of his memory.

The second stanza of the song is a repetition of the first, with the singer asking again where her loved one's voice is coming from, questioning the wind for the falling tears and the aching years. In the end, she admits to herself that she was wrong, and it is just the wind. It is a hauntingly beautiful song with a raw emotional depth that resonates with anyone who has ever lost a loved one.
