Speak Now
Anna Starlight Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am not the kind of girl
Who should be rudely barging in on a white veil occasion
But you are not the kind of boy
Who should be marrying the wrong girl

I sneak in and see your friends
And her snotty little family all dressed in pastel
And she is yelling at a bridesmaid
Somewhere back inside a room
Wearing a gown shaped like a pastry

This is surely not what you thought it would be
I lose myself in a daydream
Where I stand and say

Don't say "Yes", run away now
I'll meet you when you're out of the church at the back door
Don't wait or say a single vow
You need to hear me out
And they said, "Speak now."

Fond gestures are exchanged
And the organ starts to play
A song that sounds like a death march
And I am hiding in the curtains
It seems that I was uninvited by your lovely bride-to-be

She floats down the aisle like a pageant queen
But I know you wish it was me,
You wish it was me,
Don't you?

Don't say "Yes", run away now,
I'll meet you when you're out of the church at the back door.
Don't wait or say a single vow,
You need to hear me out,
And they said, "Speak now."
Don't say "Yes", run away now,
I'll meet you when you're out of the church at the back door.
Don't wait or say a single vow,
Your time is running out,
And they said, "Speak now."

Oh, la, la
Oh, oh
Say a single vow

I hear the preacher say, "Speak now or forever hold your peace."
There's the silence, there's my last chance.
I stand up with shaky hands, all eyes on me.
Horrified looks from everyone in the room
But I'm only looking at you.

I am not the kind of girl
Who should be rudely barging in on a white veil occasion
But you are not the kind of boy
Who should be marrying the wrong girl

So, don't say "Yes", run away now,
I'll meet you when you're out of the church at the back door.
Don't wait or say a single vow,
You need to hear me out,
And they said, "Speak now."
And you say, "Let's run away now,
I'll meet you when I'm out of my tux at the back door.
Baby, I didn't say my vows,

So glad you were around
When they said, "Speak now."

Overall Meaning

Anna Starlight's "Speak Now" is a song about a woman who interrupts a wedding to declare her love for the groom. The singer starts by admitting that she is not the type of person who should be crashing a wedding, but the groom is not the type of person who should be marrying the wrong girl. She sneaks into the wedding and sees the bride's family and friends, including the bride herself, who seems to be angry and unpleasant. The singer starts to daydream about stopping the wedding and telling the groom not to say "Yes".

As the wedding preparations continue, the singer's jealousy and desperation continue to grow. She hides in the curtains as the bride walks down the aisle, and the organ plays a song that sounds like a death march, emphasizing the singer's feelings of dismay. The preacher asks if anyone has any objections, and this prompts the singer to stand and declare her love for the groom. The groom reacts by agreeing to run away with her and cancel the wedding.

The song is a powerful story of unrequited love and desperation. It shows that sometimes, people are willing to do desperate things to win the love of someone else. However, it also highlights the importance of listening to one's heart and following one's instincts, even when it means breaking societal norms.

Elevator buttons and morning air,
Strangers silence makes me want to take the stairs,
If you were here we'd laugh about their vacant stares,
But right now,
My time is theirs.

Seems like there's always
Someone who disapproves,
They'll judge it like they know about me and you,
And the verdict comes from those with nothing else to do,
The jury's out,
And my choice is you.

So don't you worry your pretty little mind,
People throw rocks at things that shine,
And life makes love look hard,
The stakes are high,
The waters rough,
But this love is ours,

You never know what people have up their sleeves,
Ghosts from your past gonna jump out at me,
Lurking in the shadows with their lip gloss smiles,
But I don't care,
'Cause right now you're mine,
And you say,

So don't you worry your pretty little mind,
People throw rocks at things that shine,
And life makes love look hard,
The stakes are high,
The water's rough,
But this love is ours

And it's not theirs to speculate,
If it's wrong and,
Your hands are tough but they are where,
My belong in,
I'll fight their doubt and give you faith with this song for you.

'Cause I love the gap between your teeth,
And I love the riddles that you speak,
And any snide remarks from my father about your tattoos will be ignored,
'Cause my heart is yours.

So don't you worry your pretty little mind,
People throw rocks at things that shine,
And life makes love look hard,

And don't you worry your pretty little mind,
People throw rocks at things that shine,
But they can't take what's ours,
They can't take what's ours,
The stakes are high,
The water's rough,
But this love is ours.

I don't know why but I cry every time I watch this video. Maybe because it shows us a life of an introvert office worker Taylor who is bullied, others gossip about her and just when we think nothing special will happen, there is the scene of her reunion with her lover, who managed to come back from war. And this quick moment for me is so powerful. This video shows us that we see only a small piece of others lives. Just because they seem to be boring, lonely or strange, doesn't mean that they are not a ray of light in lives of others. Respect each other, love each other, help each other. This is the only thing that matters...

Gosh you are right!
