Summer Rain
Anna Ternheim Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I know people complained I had something else in mind
Not the sound of rain against my window pane
All I could hear was you hammering in my head
Fall like a wave against a rock
Leave with a rush or get crushed
You never know until after the shock
One day I don't know how my whole life evolved
Around You, my Lord, believing was not enough
You said I was a hole of desperate need
And no love in the world, not even Yours could satisfy me
That's when the troubles began, disasters came
One by one I nearly drowned in that summer rain
Fall like a wave against a rock
Leave with a rush or get crushed
You never know until after the shock
When you wake up, what's broken what's not
We fall like waves against the rock
Leave with a rush or get crushed
You never know until after the shock
When you wake up, what's broken what's not
When you wake up, what's broken what's not
The lyrics of Anna Ternheim's "Summer Rain" depict a tumultuous summer filled with emotional turmoil and hardships. The singer reflects on a past summer that was filled with rain, which others complained about but brought to her mind the memory of a person. The singer seems haunted by this person, and their presence is so overpowering that all she can hear is them hammering in her head, a metaphorical depiction of their influence. The imagery of rain, which is usually associated with renewal and growth, is instead used to showcase the singer's emotional struggles.
The chorus of the song talks about falling like a wave against a rock. Here, the singer is likening herself to a wave crashing against a rock – either leaving with great force or being crushed by the impact. This metaphor portrays how life can be unpredictable, and one can never be sure of the outcomes. The following lines explain how one can never know what is broken or not until the actual shock has passed.
Furthermore, the second verse portrays the singer's relationship with God. She talks about how she believed in God but still felt a desperate need for something else. The person she speaks of earlier must have been one of those things she needed. This realization caused her a great deal of trouble, with disasters following one after the other, leading to her feeling like she was drowning in the summer rain. Overall, the song seems to be about the unpredictable nature of life and the pain that comes with being consumed by strong emotions.
