I Dreamed A Dream
Anne Hathaway Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving

Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed

Now life has killed the dream
I dreamed

Overall Meaning

Anne Hathaway's song "I Dreamed a Dream" is a powerful ballad that speaks to the loss of innocence and shattered dreams. The song starts with a nostalgic depiction of a time when "men were kind," "love was blind," and the "world was a song." The use of the past tense in these lines shows that this era is now long gone, and the singer seems to lament the fact that things have changed. The lyrics then shift to a dream sequence in which the singer longs for a time when hope was high and life was worth living. This is a time when she believed that love would never die, and God would be forgiving. She describes herself as young and unafraid, with dreams that were made and used and wasted.

However, the dream is interrupted by the arrival of tigers that come at night, tearing apart the hope and turning the dream into shame. It is not clear what these tigers represent, but they may symbolize the harsh realities of life that have shattered the singer's dreams. She then reminisces about a man who brought endless wonder into her life and took her childhood in his stride but left when autumn came. She still dreams that he will come back, and they will live the years together. However, there are dreams that cannot be, and there are storms that cannot be weathered. The singer says she had a dream that her life would be different from the hell she is living, but life has killed that dream.

The song speaks to the universal experience of shattered dreams and lost innocence. It shows how life can be cruel and unexpected, taking away our hopes and leaving us with nothing but regrets. The singer's voice adds a haunting quality to the lyrics, making them all the more poignant.

I really don't understand the hate that Anne Hathaway got after this movie. This was truly one of the most well deserved Oscar wins in history.

@stonecutter2

Les Mis is a terrific musical, great songs, great rich opportunity for actors to dive deep. It had a legendary run on Broadway. I think most people felt this was just a revival of an old favorite and was easy winnings for Oscars. It's exceptionally well done as this film though. Anne is fantastic in it.

@brontew cat hugh jackman was on broadway and anne hathaway has a good voice and they brought a bunch of people over from broadway

@brontewcat

@TopNotchcardz 16 Maybe, but she doesn’t have a top voice. Les Miz is like an opera, and it needs strong voices. While I do not think the producers needed classically trained opera singers, it needs strong voices. Anne Hathaway is a good actress, but her voice was not strong enough.

Hugh Jackman was fine, but Russell Crowe’s voice was a train-wreak.

@brontewcat

This is, of course, personal preference. I am much more emotionally moved by beautiful music than good acting. So for me, no matter how good Anne Hathaway’s acting, I am not going to be emotionally moved as by somewhat weaker acting but a much better voice. I understand from an interview I saw with her, Anne Hathaway made a deliberate choice not to sing it ‘pretty’. I get that choice, but in my view the song required a stronger voice.

Movie musicals used to always have strong voices, even if the producers/ directors had to use a voice double. Just because this is movie does not mean the the acting has to prioritised over the singing. There are plenty of non musical versions of Les Miserables if it is acting that is wanted, including a brilliant French version with Gerard Depardieu as Valjean and John Malkovich as Jarvert.

@topnotchcardz1639

@brontew cat yes of course im just saying she pulled it off for someone who isnt a trained singer

This is the most dramatic, emotional performance ever, she incorporates and conveys the drama and emotion fully. 20 out of 10 performance, she put the bar for others extremely high. Well done!

@TheSidrawoman

I would add just another one: Natalie Wood - Splendour in the grass! The bath scene… amazing!

@SS_DT

I will never understand why people disliked her in this role. She was beyond perfect.
