Lilli Marlene
Anne Shelton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You always hurt the ones you love,
The one you shouldn′t hurt at all.
You always take the sweetest rose
And crush it until the petals fall.

You always break the kindest of hearts
With a hasty word you can't recall.
And if I broke your heart last night,

It′s because I love you most of all!

Overall Meaning

These poignant lyrics by Anne Shelton in her song Lili Marlene express the sad reality of how love can sometimes turn into pain and hurt. The singer begins by stating that the ones we love the most are often the ones we end up hurting, even though we should be protecting them. The opening line of the song, "You always hurt the ones you love" sets the tone of regret and remorse that permeates throughout the rest of the song. The singer then goes on to say that people tend to take the most beautiful things and destroy them, like crushing the sweetest rose until its petals fall. The use of the rose symbolizes the fragility of love and how it can easily be damaged or destroyed.

The second verse of the song continues to explore the pain that love can sometimes bring. The singer acknowledges that sometimes, we say things in haste that we don't mean to hurt the ones we love the most. The line "you always break the kindest of hearts with a hasty word you can't recall" is a poignant reminder that words can have a lasting impact on our loved ones. In the final line of the song, the singer admits that if she broke her lover's heart last night, it was because she loves him the most. This final line shows that sometimes, love can be so intense that it becomes overwhelming and leads to accidental hurt.

Overall, Anne Shelton's lyrics in Lili Marlene serve as a poignant reminder that love can be both beautiful and painful. The use of simple yet impactful language, combined with an emotional melody, makes this song a timeless classic that resonates with people of all ages and backgrounds.

Another lover hits the universe, the circle is broken. But with death comes rebirth, and like all lovers and sad people, I am a poet.
- Kill Your Darlings (My favorite quote from the movie. It also is the most heartbreaking movie in the world but at the same time the most beautiful movie in the world and also my favorite. I love it so much and cry every time I watch it)

Such a magnificent voice, One can easily see why all the allied solders fell in love with such a wholesome female voice. I'm sure she brought many boy back home if only in memory of a girl left behind. Most moving! Bravo

I love this version of this iconic song. Anne is often compared to Vera Lynn, these comparisons are silly as they have very differing singing styles. Both are excellent in their own way.

A great, but somewhat forgotten singer. She was the only British singer to broadcast with the Glenn Miller when he was in the UK during the war. He rated her voice so highly that he gave her a bracelet of solid gold to represent her voice. She should have been in the aeroplane with him when he disappeared in 1944. She was under contract to the British Dance Band Leader, Bert Ambrose at the time. Ambrose refused to release her. In doing so,,he saved her life!
