TATTOO
Anne Weiss Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
moving fast between the cars
hair shorn to silver
tattoos underneath his scars
the bankers and the lawyers
sitting smugly in the cars
maybe they despise him
he's better at that then they are
You think that nobody cares
just because, just because
they seem like they don't care
you think that nobody cares
just because, just because
they act like they don't care
I've seen guys like him before
maybe he's just full of pain
maybe he's like they are
just trying to run away
maybe he's like I am
everybody feels betrayed
I think all about these things
as much as I think about you
The accident was no surprise
everybody knows the odds
but the people leaping from their cars
who risked their lived to run across
and people ripping their fine clothes
to stop the blood and stop the loss
the perfect woman on the perfect phone
shouting she would pay the cost
and some people were crying
some singing him a lullaby
and no one was afraid to love
and no one was a afraid to try
And I think I know you now
Anne Weiss's song Tattoo contemplates the life of a man with tattoos and scars driving recklessly in traffic. He catches the attention of the songwriter as she sees him in her rearview mirror, and she reflects on the possibility that the man is neglected by society. She imagines that the bankers and lawyers in their cars may judge him or be repulsed by his appearance; however, the man might be better at despising them than they could ever manage. The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "you think that nobody cares, just because they seem like they don't care." Weiss suggests that people may ignore others who appear different or troubled, but it does not mean that nobody cares. She speaks to the universal emotion of feeling betrayed and the internal conflicts that arise in every individual's life. The songwriter then juxtaposes the man's erratic behavior on the roads with a larger situation where the man causes an accident. She notes that those who witnessed the event took action to help the man; some sang to him, and others cried, and no one was afraid to love, nor were people afraid to try.
