drive
Anneke van Giersbergen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Eh-eh-oh, eh-eh-oh.
Eh-eh-oh, eh-eh-oh.

Sun glasses on. I’m driving.
I am in control: hundred fifty miles an hour.
I don’t mind the speed, no, but I’ve got my demons.
I am in control: call that human power.
Are you out there?
Eh-oh, eh-eh-eh-oh.
Is there anybody out there?
Eh-oh, eh-eh-eh-oh.

And I only want to drive,
Want to go far, far away.
I only know that I am
on the road, I’m leaving today.
Eh-eh-oh, eh-eh-oh.
And I only want to drive and move on.

Got no brakes, I’m flying,
Never losing control, moving at the speed of light.
Exactly what I need, oh, and I don’t need no sleep, no,
‘Cause I am in control and I will never stop.

Are you out there?
Eh-oh, eh-eh-eh-oh.
Is there anybody out there?
Eh-oh, eh-eh-eh-oh.

And I only want to drive,
Want to go far, far away.
I only know that I,
On the road, I’m leaving today.
Eh-eh-oh, eh-eh-oh.
And I only want to drive and move on.
Eh-eh-oh, eh-eh-oh.

Never looking back, never looking back,
Never looking back, never looking back.

Want to go far, far away.
I only know that I,
I’m alone, I’m leaving today.
Eh-eh-oh, eh-eh-oh.
(Never looking back, never looking back.)
And I only want to drive and move on.

(Never looking back, never looking back.)
Eh-eh-oh.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Anneke van Giersbergen's song "Drive" speak about a person who is in control while driving their car at high speed. The first verse describes the feeling of driving at a speed of a hundred and fifty miles per hour, indicating that the singer of the song is fearless and has complete control of their vehicle.

However, the singer acknowledges that they have demons, suggesting that they may be running away from something or trying to escape from reality. Despite this, the author accepts that they are in control and mentions "human power" as the driving force behind their determination to keep moving forward.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the singer's desire to leave everything behind and just "drive "far, far away." The repetition of the phrase "eh-oh" suggests that the author is seeking some sort of connection or acknowledgment from someone else on this journey.

The second verse describes the singer as "flying" and "moving at the speed of light," indicating that they are embracing a sense of freedom and liberation while on the road. The author further states that they do not need any sleep, indicating that they are on a mission and will not stop until they reach their destination.

Overall, the song highlights the sense of control and freedom that one can feel while driving. At the same time, it also raises questions about the motivations behind such reckless actions and the psychological state of the singer.

I've been a pretty hard core metal fan for most of my life, I love Anneke's music, her voice, the arrangement, lyrics, everything, it's addicting...

LLORT3

Progressive Nation 2014 sampler brought me here. ;-)

Easily the most addicting song on an impressive disc; I will definitely be checking out more of AVG's work. Glad to see this one getting a very positive reception in the notoriously snobby and male-dominated prog rock community.

She's more pop-rock than she is prog. She was on the ship with Devin Townsend, whom she frequently supports on CD and big shows like that. I guess Progressive Nation also allowed her to play her music, as many (like, all?) Devin fans also like her.

It's great album. I love it. Thank you Anneke!

Love it! So much energy and positivity in this album ... the trip rock stuff has become so booooring and its a shame, but Anneke still rocks!

Dear Anneke, I'm so glad to hear your songs, and I think you're really happy with your work... As I see it, thats all that counts!!! Greetings from Chile!!

This is actually quite good. I feel it has a lot more details than, say, "Feel Alive", to compare relatively commercial singles. It is also more modern, but that doesn't make it bad, and has great melodies as well. It even has a funky touch at the vocals in the chorus, and I'm sure it'll sound a lot rockier live (the production doesn't exploit the rock edge of the music here). I am also a sucker for what she did with TG and would love her to do something more experimental, but this is good.

I'm in love with this music, she build her own style in a pop/rock vibe very well. Her voice still wonderful. C'mon guys, this is Anneke, not The Gathering, she don't sing doom anymore and I think this is a great change for her career.

I can't stop listening to this. I adore you!! Your voice, your music, your lyrics, your smile. You are really a DIVA!!! Please come back to Mexico any time soon!!
