The song "Tom's Diner" by AnnenMayKantereit is a cover of the 1981 song by Suzanne Vega. The lyrics describe the singer sitting in a diner, waiting for coffee from the man behind the counter, who only fills the cup halfway. The singer sees a woman come in, and the man behind the counter greets her warmly. The singer looks away, pretending not to see them as they kiss hello. The song ends with a repetition of the phrase "It's always nice to see you."
The song is a commentary on everyday life and the small moments that make up our day-to-day experiences. The mundane, repetitive nature of sitting in a diner waiting for coffee is juxtaposed with the warmth and familiarity of the people who frequent the establishment. The singer chooses to ignore the intimate moment between the man and the woman, perhaps out of a desire for privacy or a feeling of discomfort.
Some possible interpretations of the song include the theme of loneliness, as the singer is sitting alone in the diner, and the theme of missed connections, as the singer chooses not to acknowledge the greeting between the man and the woman.
