Walt Disney definitely didn’t want Annette Funicello to do any film in which she wore a bikini. Annette did it anyway because she was a grown woman and she knew that the bikini was not harmful to herself or her career. She was moving onto another phase as an actress and she didn’t want to be typecast as an Eternal Mouseketeer and not taken seriously. AIP was a film company that was about exploitation and pure escapism.
To his credit, he was trying to protect Annette. She went ahead and the rest was history.

Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman is one of my all-time favorites because of one reason; it was my first car movie. The Imperial that was driven was so cool. And the sheriff’s Plymouth Fury(I think), had nice tail fins. When I was a kid watching this film, I sort of expected every car in a 50’s film to have tail fins. Actress and Playboy Playmate Yvette Vickers who played Honey Parker was almost injured after the scene of Nancy Archer’s rampage (or the one giant rubber had that was used disguised as both male and female). The director Mark Hanna told her not to move her head because if she did , she would have been cut badly.

My favorite male character in the film is Deputy Charlie played by Frank Chase. He was the comic relief and he is the sort of character who is good natured but overeager (I assumed that he was probably an Army Military Police officer or Navy Shore Patrol). Frank Chase and Yvette Vickers’ dance scene was not scripted but it was Frank’s idea to liven the scene up.

The director Nathan Hertz(he is best known as Nathan Juran) had directed other creature features like 20 Million Miles To Earth, The Deadly Mantis and had directed an episode or two of Lost In Space and maybe Land Of The Giants. He was a busy guy back then.

I miss the drive-in. The last time I saw a movie in the drive-in was before I graduated from high school. Me and a friend had a serious chat about what we were going to do with our lives after we graduated. And we talked about other life issues. He joined the Army and was stationed in Germany. I was still trying to find out what my purpose was (and I am still searching).

The multiplex cinemas filled a void, but I still love the privacy of the drive-in.

They re-opened our local drive in movie theatre here because of Covid! It's always packed, and the new Jurassic Park movie just played! Annette was a real girl next door! The beach movies were lots of fun to watch too!

Annette was always my favorite Dave. From the first time I watched her on the original Mickey Mouse Club through the Beach Party movies to guest starring on TV shows such as Fantasy Island. She was in other movies as well such as the Monkees 1968 movie Head. She also had a few hit records in the 50s and 60s Tall Paul and Pineapple Princess. She was so pretty and talented

I know. WD tried to control people who worked for him. He totally ruined the career of the woman who voiced Snow White. She could never sing again because he didn't want it revealed who sang. I wonder if she ever got compensated for a career she could have had?

I’ve never been to a Drive-In before, though there’s one that’s not too far from where I live. One day I’ll have to see about what movies the Drive-In is playing and then go and experience one for myself. I like how Walt cared for Annette when she did other films and gave her advice. Amazing how times have changed, back then an actress showing her navel was taboo! Nice that Walt Disney continued to look out for her even after she stopped working for Disney. Similar to Walt's advice to Annette, on I Dream of Jeannie the network censors wouldn't allow Barbara Eden to show her navel, which is why her genie costume had a high waistband. I first remember seeing Funicello in the Disney movies "The Shaggy Dog" and "The Monkey's Uncle." I actually just recently saw "Beach Party" for the first time on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) channel.

I have never seen the beach movies, but I remember the Trailers for them while watching the Family Film Festival with Tom Hatton on KTLA Channel 5 in California. And my Last time in a Drive-in Theater was watching Clash of the Titans in 1981 at the Paramount Drive-in, which I just looked up while commenting and found that it is still open. Keep up the Good Stuff Dave, Your channel is a Time Machine. ☺👍

Always loved Annette. As a young boy I of course noticed that she never wore a "revealing" swimsuit like the other beach girls. She obviously had the body for a bikini. IMO there's only one sexier naval on tv and that was Barbara Eden. (I know, it was never seen anywhere but in my mind🤣)

Drive in theaters were perfect for families with small restless children. It sure beat having the running up and down aisles or screaming. The city in Ohio where I used to live had a drive in theater. I'm not sure if it's still there, though. The city where I live now had an inactive drive in theater when we first moved here. Now, there's a large apartment building complex.

Drive-ins were the best. I spent my early years in various locales in California, which is obviously an ideal place for them. I have lots of childhood memories of my parents taking my brother and me to see movies at local drive-ins, in our station wagon and in our PJ's no less, and we always had a blast. I remember one double bill in particular, "Planet of the Apes" and "Fantastic Voyage." That's as good of a sci-fi pairing as you can get right there. Good times and it's too bad they've largely faded into history. Pure Americana right there.

Dave, Dave Dave. You really struck a nerve with this upload. Annette Funicello was my biggest biggest, crush in my childhood, even though she was 13 years older than me and a lot of other little boys my age felt the same at the time. She had this magnetism about her. Once one of her male mouseketeers said she had the same reaction with the other male mouseketeers, even though in his opinion there were prettier girl mouseketeers, there was just something about Annette that made her stand out in the heart department.
As for drive in theaters, I use to live in a trailer park next to a drive in, and if you went a little ways outside the trailer court you could some what see the movie that was playing, but not hear the sound. Sometimes car radios could could pick up the sound, even though now that's not so unusual as with the few rare modern drive ins in some places, that's how you get the sound instead of the old speakers you attached to your roled down window. Oh yes, you brought back memories with this one. Thank you sir.

I've never found the beach movies all that fascinating, but I did watch them in my teen years, as I thought they were a hoot.

As for the belly button myth in LaLaLand.............supposedly showing a bellybutton was a NO NO because it was close to "that private area" and supposedly would give "suggestive thoughts" to people watching. ROFL, I know.........right? But that was back then. Women were still considered "things", and men still made the rules for what could and could not be done.........regardless of powerhouse women like Lucille Ball and Doris Day, even Jane Fonda.

Remember, the censors had a fit with I Dream of Jeannies costume. They made them change it to hide HER bellybutton!! They wanted her to show LESS skin, but the producers wouldn't budge. So the "meeting of the minds" was that she cover her bellybutton, and the censors would allow the costume.
So the myth goes.

@Dave, Since you have opened the can of worms that is the Beach Movies, you've got to do a video on Eric Von Zipper himself, the great sorely underrated actor, Harvey Lembeck, scene stealer extraordinaire. He was stage actor and director on Broadway and off. Phil Silvers' sidekick on Sgt. Bilko. And an acting teacher. What I would have given to have him as my acting teacher when I was in the business. He passed away too young.

The 1960s had their problems, 1 channel in Black and White, poor kids like me only got Army Men and Matchbox cars for Christmas. I got screwed of Birthdays because my birthday is December 27th. Also, I was only 12 in 1969 so all the bad stuff like drugs and Vietnam didn't affect me. We didn't have cool toys, or 50 channels, or Internet. We did have imagination. I remember that the Dasterdly and Mutley show came on, and we had just gotten a new refrigerator. For 3 days, that refrigerator box became my Airplane of the Eagle Squadron, shooting down Dasterdly and the Red Baron. A stupid Summer rain storm destroyed the poor box. How many kids today could totally blow 3 Summer days in a box decorated by crayons, with 2 toy Tommy Guns taped on to simulate machine guns? I was Sgt. Nick Fury and I let my younger brother be Sgt. Rock. Both were cool, but Fury was cooler because he hung out with Captain America! LOL

I got to go to the Drive in a few times in the 1960s. We didn't go often because of mosquito's. I mostly went to the Rogers, an indoor theater. I saw ton of Hercules and Hercules knockoffs, also saw the Beach Party movies and others. Back then, 2 movies, big soda and popcorn were about $2.50. And, you knew your kids were safe and would be there when you wanted to pick them up.

I don't know about America's sweetheart, but she sure was mine. She was my first crush on a famous female and I had it bad. Didn't happen like that again until Katherine Ross many years later.
The Tubes Completion Backwards Principle was a masterwork on vinyl and on stage. Attack of the 50 Foot Woman was performed as Fee Waybill was rejected continously by a woman at a bar. Hilarious metaphor.
Drive-ins are a thing again in some parts of L.A. Instead of the crappy box speaker sound though, the sound is broadcast through your car's radio (or great sound system, if you have one) Good vid Dave. Thanks, my friend.

There's still a drive in on the NJ/ NY border, open from April to October. I've been going for 20 years, and your entry fee pays for a double feature! These days the sound is broadcast on FM radio, so your sound quality depends on your car stereo. Not an everyday viewing spot, it really kept cinephiles like me going during Covid.

I grew up at the Drive-In Movie Theaters....We bounced around between 4 of them!!! Happily, 2 still exist in my next of the So Cal woods!! Most of the fun elements are gone though....the playground, the cartoons. They still play music (American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest on repeat)

I think Walt meant well but really, unless Annette was going to be the next Doris Day, his warning wasn't necessary. That type of squeaky clean actress who never swore or drank or kissed a boy onscreen, etc., was seen as kind of silly and unrealistic by the time the 60s rolled around. Heck, even Julie Andrews ended up doing a topless scene years later. Those beach movies were objectively terrible but had a certain charm and innocence to them even by the time I watched them in the early 80s. Kids today would laugh at the suggestion they were risque at all. Have a great 4th Dave!

Dave. Do you think due to the pandemic, and the need for social distancing the drive in theater will make A comeback? It seems to be the sensible thing to do. It amazes me how tastes have changed. When movies first came out it was inappropriate for A woman to show anything above the knees. Now they can show butt cheeks.

1968 gas was 34 cents a gallon for high test. Regular you could get for .28 cents and we'd still drive another mile to the station that had it for .26

@Dave Sundstrom Why I asked is that restaurant is themed like a drive -in and you sit in "cars" to eat. While you are eating, up on the "movie screen" they show trailers from old B movies (Attack of the 50 foot woman, Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc.) and old news reels. It's actually quite a blast. I think you would get a kick out of it. Something to see if you go sometime. Unfortunately Disney is acting strange, and I am no longer going also.

I remember This driving in Theaters as a kid. I Remember some movies

Jaws . BUCK ROGER'S
Somke & The Bandit & Others. Some time in The 80's 2 or 3 last movies

I think Walt probably was very controlling...but, I'm not certain that's how he was with Annette.

It would be safe to say he was controlling her because it would be bad for his empire's wholesome image. Annette will always be considered as apart of Disney's image, and at that time his biggest star, Walt knew this. He didn't want any possible scandal between his company and a formal employee. Even Disney tried to take it as far as personally calling Arkoff, the head at AIP over the phone to not allow her belly button to be seen. Can you imagine your former boss telling your new boss what to do? And especially when you were legally of age, as an adult who had already signed a new contract? Arkoff had to tell Disney to go to hell. But Annette was nice about it and respected Walt's wish.

In episodes of I Dream Of Jeannie where Jeannie and Tony go to Hawaii, and visit the beach, complete with bikini clad women, Barbara Eden still wasn't allowed to show her navel!
