Tic Tac
Annie Brocoli Lyrics

Overall Meaning

The song Tic-Tac-Toe by Annie Brocoli tells the story of two separate communities of fish, the X's and the O's, who live in separate parts of the ocean, divided by a net. Each community has their own territory and they never mix with each other. However, they start to get bored and one clever X comes up with the idea of playing a game of Tic Tac Toe on the net that separates them. Soon, the X's and O's start to bond over the game and even come up with a new community, the OX's. The OX's continue to play Tic Tac Toe even after the net separating them is removed and they learn to appreciate and celebrate their differences.

The lyrics are a metaphor for the importance of bridging divides and finding common ground in order to create a sense of community and belonging. The song promotes the idea of inclusivity and acceptance of differences, a theme that is particularly relevant today in our increasingly diverse world. Through the playful and imaginative use of a game, the song teaches children about the power of collaboration, solidarity and creativity in finding solutions to problems and building strong relationships.
