Hello Dolly
Annie Cordy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello Dolly
Et tu m'as pris, Dolly

T'as perdu la partie, Dolly

Overall Meaning

The French song "Hello Dolly" by Annie Cordy is about the end of a romantic relationship between the singer and a woman named Dolly. Throughout the song, the singer reminds Dolly of her beauty and allure, but ultimately reveals that she has lost the game of love. The singer explains how he was once under Dolly's spell, but eventually realized that she only loved herself. As a result, he has moved on and is now happy with someone else.

The first verse sets the scene by describing Dolly's beauty and apparent invincibility in love. The second verse reveals the singer's devastation upon seeing Dolly dance with someone else, but ultimately ends with the realization that the singer's happiness was not dependent on Dolly's affection. The chorus ("Hello Dolly, my pretty Dolly, I think you lost the game") repeats this theme of triumph over heartbreak.

Overall, "Hello Dolly" is a cautionary tale about the dangers of vanity and self-centeredness in romantic relationships. The singer warns Dolly that her beauty and charm are not enough to sustain a relationship, and ultimately, it is love and selflessness that win the game.
