You Took Me Dancing
Annie Drury Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lights go out
I've got my best dress on
You'd keep a fire light inside
A thunder storm
And I've been to dark places
And I know you have too
But there's something real going on inside of you
And you took me dancing
And I was feeling blue
And you sent my heart singing
Oh don't wanna dance with nobody but you
Nobody but you

There's something I know
Goodness leaks through your bones
There's just something about the way you make me feel at home
And I love what you do
Feels like the stars and the moon
Oh play that tune

Oh, with you I'm home
With you
Oh, with you I'm home
With you

You still take me dancing
And I start to feel blue
And you send my heart singing
Oh don't wanna dance, oh don't wanna dance, oh don't wanna dance
With nobody but you

Oh, don't wanna dance with nobody

Oh, don't wanna dance with nobody
Oh, don't wanna dance with nobody but you

Overall Meaning

The song "You Took Me Dancing" by Annie Drury speaks about the healings that love can offer in times of darkness. The first verse sets the mood by stating that the lights have gone out and the singer has put on her best dress. This suggests that she is preparing to face something significant or important. The line "You'd keep a fire light inside a thunderstorm" implies that the person she is with can keep them safe and calm during turmoil. The second line of the verse indicates that both the singer and the person she is with have been through difficult times before but there is something real brewing inside them.

The chorus of the song harks back to the past when the person she is with first took her dancing. In the moments when the singer was feeling blue, the person she is with lifts her up and sends her heart singing. The line "Oh don't wanna dance with nobody but you" shows the impact that this person has on the singer. They make her feel special, loved, and complete.

The verse following the chorus echoes the sentiment of the first verse, only this time it implies that the person she is with is a genuine, kind-hearted individual. Their presence makes her feel at home, and she appreciates them for what they are. The final chorus repeats the same sentiment as the earlier one, only this time it states that the person she is with still takes her dancing, and she doesn't want to be with anybody else.

Overall, the song is a beautiful ode to love, showing us that even in moments of darkness or difficulty, love can heal and make us feel whole again.

She does all those styles, heavenly/raspy/soul/dark/lost/jazz/new age with such raw emotion from everything I've seen. My best friend thought her last one was a Sarah song lol. Sirens takes me to a weird and amazing place and dark and happy all at once. Really got me thru the hardest time with mom. Thank you for that and for being you.
