Annie Lennox Lyrics

Coming out of the darkness and into the light
Shining along in the curiously bright
This is the sound of those murderous drums
Watching the footsteps the twisting of thumbs
Over and over again he recalls we're lost
We're lost
Tell me the story 'bout when u were young
I want to hear it again
Even the parts where the hero gets stung
I want to savor it
I want to play it again
This is the sound of a baby's first breaths
The dying footsteps
The touching of flesh
To hold in your memory
To keep by your chest
We're lost
We're lost
We're lost
The lyrics of Annie Lennox's song Lost delve into the themes of disorientation, confusion, and nostalgia for the past. The opening lines create an eerie and ominous tone, referring to the sound of planes in the night, which are coming out of the darkness and into the light, suggesting a transition from darkness to clarity. However, the planes are described as "murderous drums", which creates a sense of danger and conflict. The line "Over and over again he recalls we're lost" further emphasizes the sense of disorientation and uncertainty that the song is exploring.
The chorus, which repeats the lines "We're lost" three times, serves as a refrain that bolsters the song's theme of being adrift and disconnected. However, the second verse takes a more contemplative tone, as the song shifts its focus to nostalgia and the desire to revisit earlier times. Lennox sings about wanting to hear a story from when the listener was young, including the parts where the hero gets "stung", suggesting that the singer is interested in hearing about life's difficult and bittersweet moments. The final verse returns to the present moment, contrasting a baby's first breath with the "dying footsteps" and "touching of flesh", perhaps serving as a commentary on the cycle of life and death.
