La Vie En Rose
Annie Trousseau Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

"La vie en rose" is a song, originally in French, sung by French chanteuse Edith Piaf in 1945. The song was written by Louis Guglielmi and Marguerite Monnot. The lyrics of the song are about being in love and how the emotions of falling in love can make everything seem brighter, more beautiful. The singer is describing the man she loves and how he makes her feel as if everything in life is wonderful.

The first verse talks about the man the singer is in love with. She describes his eyes, which make her own eyes lower in their gaze, and a laughter that disappears into his mouth, as a true portrayal of the man she belongs to. The second verse talks about how when he takes her in his arms and speaks softly to her, she sees life in rose- colored glasses-literally. The third verse describes how his simple words of love, something he does every day, have the power to cause her emotions to overflow. She goes on to explain that he has entered her heart and brought her a level of happiness that has no other cause. Their love is reciprocal, confirmed when he pledges his love for her for life.

Every time the singer catches sight of her lover, she feels her heart beating with love. The song ends with the affirmation of love, that they are for each other in life as they have vowed to one another. The song's joyful and optimistic lyrics of the emotions of falling in love have attracted several other singers to cover it, including Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, and Dino Martin. Each cover has brought a unique style and interpretation to the song, but the essence of the feelings of falling in love has always stayed the same.
