The band was started by Adam Baker in 2003 as a side project of the still active sister band Sunfold, formerly known as Sedona and headed up by lead guitarist Kenny Florence. Ace Fu Records signed Annuals in the fall of 2005 and then released their debut LP Be He Me on October 17, 2006. Annuals' sophomore album, Such Fun, was released on October 7, 2008.
They are frequently compared to the Arcade Fire, Animal Collective, and Broken Social Scene and are known for their intense live shows.
Confessor
Annuals Lyrics

I plant the seed to rip the roots away
And I believe every word you say calls the thunder
And spooks off the pain
And through the windows in the chapel
Is laying in the morning light
Every wick and every candle
I'm here with your dress at night
I confess
At the hem of your dress
I confess
To spook off the pain
Is when I always catch you laughing
At the cusp of everyday
Is when I always catch you grinning
It suits you well
The lyrics of Annuals' song Confessor paint a picture of somebody who is stuck in a cycle of leaving and returning, of planting seeds only to rip them away, and of seeking solace in someone they love. The song is a confession to this person, with the singer admitting that it is their words that call forth thunder and spook off the pain.
There is a sense of mystery and ritual that surrounds the person to whom this song is addressed. The imagery of the chapel, with its wicks and candles, suggests a religious or spiritual significance to their presence. And when the singer is with them at night, they confess to being spooked off the pain - as though this person has the power to banish all their fears and anxieties.
Ultimately, the song is a tribute to the power of love and the ways in which it can transform us. It acknowledges the highs and lows of any relationship, but ultimately emphasizes the beauty and joy that can be found in even the most difficult moments.
