Judge Funmi with due respect ma, You are making this court looks childish.. This is a court and not elders forum where u settle matters..If I bring a debtor to court and I say I want my money back. I don't care how he get it. Just enforce the law, and get my money, and if he refuse, he go to jail, just raise my money...he has friends let him borrow it and pay..

Stop telling Plaintiff that they should not have borrowed that much money to the defender

or that they shouldn't have allowed the defender to live in the house up to that time, What of the defender, shouldn't he know?...is he a baby?..

See, Once a defender owned up that he is owing let him pay, stop negotiating, how can u live in a house, you sleep,eat,wake for good five years as a resulting owing 600k and the court is saying you be paying 25k every month...Am sure the man can't even meet up monthly...

...that's two years to pay back, and without no interest... HABA... which court does that..

The fact is, You don't settle matter in court, you enforce matters... The time to have settle a case is before the court. Once any case landed in court, you put sentiment aside, it's time to give justice..

Don't try and negotiate, Let him run around and pay the money within a week...That is what happen when u are owing for 5yrs and it never come to ur head that u should pay...it shows u are wicked...

This man is owing a good five years rent, and not one or two years, and instead of him to pay, he keep giving birth to more children...you don't take a bad decision and then make me pay for ur wrong decision...Am not the one that sent u to have family that u can't cater for, and if u say things are hard for u, habba...for five years?

..and u seat down in one place not doing anything about it and I am the one suffering for ur decision, NO

How will u live in a house for five years and not pay a dime and at the end the judge is telling the landlord that she is part of the problem... How?...Even despite the fact that she had offered the man quit notice, yet u still blame the Landlady, Am sure the Landlady was trying to be nice and reasonable with him all these while, adhering to his pleadings, thinking the man too would be reasonable and pay, but the man has proven to be stupid, and judge Funmi is supporting this attitude.....

The question I want Jude Funmi to answer is

What is the man doing for five years, what is the wife doing for five years?

Why is it that the man hasn't even made any attempt to try and pay some of the rents for good five years...

The man said he is owing N500,000, but the landlady said N600,000, who should we believe?...How much is the man really owing,

Why hasn't Judge Funmi try and clear that?

It is very clear Judge Funmi is trying to be sentimental and sympathetic which I understand, then this court shouldn't be called court, probably we should give this court a name

Charity Court or Help people court,...When you see a court u don't judge with sentiment,

Why do people insist on living in a city when they can't pay rent. After my father died, my mother packed all of us up and we moved back to the village where no landlord will be harassing her for rent which she couldn't afford. Today, people move to the city and occupy other people's property when they can't afford to pay rent thereby stressing everybody out.

The landlord let the issue go on far too long. She was too complacent and had no urgency about the rent. If she’s already waited 5 years, she should accept the offer.

It's good to be nice but leaving a tenant to occupy your house for five years without paying rent isn't the smartest thing to do.
Tenants, please once your circumstances change and you can't afford your rent, please downsize. Move to a smaller and cheaper apartment. Stop living above your means.

But this judge is funny. Someone who owes 5 years rent already has adverse character so what other defamation can there be. I am not happy with all this negotiation. If he is negotiating repayment, he has to leave the property. Someone who has withheld rent for 5 years shouldn’t really be asking for more time in the same property. It’s almost as if it’s the landlords fault. She lives abroad so how will she chase things especially with the pandemic. Paying 25 k is clear that he will default and for the amount owed is too long a time get her money back.

There’s nothing wrong with little empathy from the judge. I agree with her wisdom and methodology. It’s obvious the man is not living well and couldn’t afford more even the N20k monthly. Also a man with a family can’t just be asked to pack out in days, bearing in mind that it will still involve money. If the landlady can wait 5 years, she will wait 3 months.

I know the rent is much less for that space in Nigeria , than in the US 🇺🇸 and you won't be able to live there as long as he has with out paying. I'm coming to Nigeria.

Judge funmi. More wisdom to you. I had similar issues. When I lost my job 2020 due to covid 19. I was staying in a 2bedroom flat with my family at alagbole Akute. When my rent due I need to vacate the premises and go back to my mothers property because I can’t stay in someone’s property without not paying. My wife left me because she can’t go back to where we came from. Now I’m happily married with another woman with a kid living in a room self contain that I can afford. The man doesn’t have any excuses. He should vacate immediately effect. He has been using juju on the woman but he don spoil. More love judge funmi

31st of OCTOBER na tomorrow.. Only if we live in a society where the government can assist the citizens with some benefits, like housing allowance, child benefits, unemployment benefits, etc.. I keep saying to people that, one of our problem in this part of the world is that, we refused to cut our coat according to our size, in so many wrong reason.. You're still struggling to even feed yourself, yet you kept having kids like fowl, some will still have concubines join.. IF WE CAN LEARN TO BE DISCIPLINE OURSELF IN TERMS OF HOW WE BREED CHILDREN IN THIS PART OF THE WORLD, we can eradicate poverty sooner than later.. Till then, our struggle continue.

@Emmanuel Skilful this case is about settlement. The idea is to make people leave the court happy not leave thee court and go hang yourselves. If the landlady can look away from the difference then why are you so bothered? Let’s shave some empathy. The man should have moved away 3 years ago. The landlady should have made sure of that.
