Alegria
Antònia Font Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cau es sol de s'horabaixa dins s'horitzó,
Damunt la mar arrissada es avions.
Cau es sol de s'horabaixa vermell i calent,
Me sala i m'arengada sa pell.
Es penyassegat
I una pluja suau de pols estelar.
Cau es sol de s'horabaixa i plàcidament
Sa gent se dutxa i ompl es carrers.
Cau es sol de s'horabaixa dins es meu cor,
Tothom m'estima i jo estim tothom.
Falla sa corrent
Ses fireres no vendran cacavets.
Alegria, ses velles se xapen de riure,
Es dies s'acaben, i es fars il.luminen
Ses góndoles entre ses cases.
Alegria, ses òrbites en sincronia,
I es ovnis se pinyen i deixen un cràter
Per sempre dins sa meva vida... alegria.

Es municipals, és evident,
Fan aparcar bé a sa gent.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Antònia Font's song Alegria describe a beautiful sunset and the sense of joy it brings. The setting sun is described as “cau es sol de s'horabaixa” (the sun sets in the evening) and is a vivid reddish-orange hue. The cove is filled with airplanes and life, as people move around joyously, with the chorus repeating “alegria” (happiness/joy). The lyrics evoke feelings of peace, love and happiness, the sense that people are content with their lives and the world around them. There is a particular moment when the residents of the town come together to laugh, as the laughter of the elderly echoes out over the town.

The lyrics touch on a sense of stoppage of time, that this moment may have been going on for a very long time and will continue to go on forever. There is a sense of intimacy with nature, as though it is the setting sun that is the source of all of the joy and contentment felt by the people of the town. There is also an element of irony in the last line, where the singer points out that the joy around the town is so palpable that even the municipal police do their jobs properly.

I don't understand the lyrics but this song makes me feel happy and melancholic at the same time...

The lyrics only talk about happy land. Mallorca island, spanish territory.

@ihateyourhandle

I'd say that is the point of it. It describes the happiness of the people of a village who live day by day, while admitting it to be far away somehow, in a sense full of loneliness and void.

The lyric "i els OVNIs s'apinyen i deixen un cràter per sempre dins la meva vida," for instance, would translate as "and UFOs come together and leave an everlasting crater inside my life." There is, I think, a sense of otherness and alienation that stains the happiness described throughout the song.

It depends for whom Mallorca is a Països Catalans (Catalan Countries) territory (just leaving this info here 😝👌🏻)

@aguacaterosa287

I speak catalan and I don't understand most of it either

@siiiiiiiiiiii_

It's Catalan but from Mallorca, and that's why it's a little bit different. I also speak Catalan and since 8 years I've been listening to it, there are still things I don't understand.
