Taylor Swift Mash-Up
Anthem Lights Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We were both young when I first saw you
I close my eyes and the flashback starts
I'm standing there in the balcony in summer air

See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns
See you make your way through the crowd
And say, hello
Little did I know

There I was Romeo, I was throwing pebbles
And your daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet"
I was crying on the staircase
Begging you, please don't go
'Cause you belong with me

If you could see
That I'm the one who understands you
Been here all along
So why can't you see?
You belong with me

Standing by and waiting at your backdoor
All this time, how could you not know?
Baby, you belong with me
You belong with me

So glad you made time to see me
How's life? Tell me how's your family
I haven't seen them in a while

You've been good, busier than ever
Small talk, work and the weather
Your guard is up and I know why
Because the last time you saw me
It's still burned in the back of your mind
You gave me roses and I left them there to die

So this is me swallowing my pride
Standing in front of you saying, "I'm sorry for that night"
I go back to December all the time
It turns out freedom ain't nothing but missing you
Wishing I'd realized what I had when you were mine
I'd go back to December all the time

Someday, I'll be living in a big ol' city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Oh, someday, I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so mean?

Don't you worry your pretty little mind
People throw rocks at things that shine
And life makes love look hard
Why you gotta be so mean?
The stakes are high, the waters rough
But this love is ours

We are never ever, ever getting back together
This love is ours
We are never ever, ever getting back together
This love is ours

'Cause I knew you were trouble when you walked in
We are never getting back together
Shame on me now
Flew me to places I'd never been
I knew you were trouble when you walked in
We are never getting back together
Shame on me now
Flew me to places I'd never been

I'm feeling 22

Losing her was blue like I'd never known
Missing her was dark grey all along
Forgetting her is like trying to know somebody you never met
Loving her was red, so red
Loving her was red, so red

Loving her was red, so red
Loving her was red, so red

Overall Meaning

The Taylor Swift Mash-Up by Anthem Lights is composed of different segments of Taylor Swift's hit songs. One of the segments is from the song "Love Story." The lyrics refer to the first moment of the couple’s relationship. They were young, and it started in the summer air when they met each other at a party, and the singer threw pebbles at the balcony where the other person was. However, the girl's father was reluctant to let them continue their relationship, which was depicted in the lyrics, "And your daddy said, 'Stay away from Juliet.'" But the singer never lost hope and made efforts to meet her, as he believed the girl belonged with him.

In the second verse, the singer is sorry for leaving the girl and wants to reunite with her. But the other person has moved on, and the singer is trying hard to move ahead despite still missing her. In the end, the lyrics come around to the present where the singer has gotten over the heartbreak, showing how the different segments of the song are woven together to tell a story.

My Dad was a big fan of Taylor Swift. He was killed by a drunk driver in June. Listening to this helps me to remember him and focus on the life he had, and not the way he died. Thank you, Anthem Lights, for making this.

I’m so sorry to hear that! I lost my dad when I was 10, and I know it hurts a lot. I’m 17 now, and I still miss him a lot. I find that talking to my horse helps because she listens. I found Anthem Lights 2 years ago, and they’ve helped me so much.

The transition from 'Mean' into 'Ours' is my favourite. So flawless.

What about singing Ours and We Are Never Getting Back Together?
Those are exact opposites and yet they were able to do it.
