Missing Link
Antifreeze Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm working from 9 until 5, I'm working just to stay alive
I don't know what's wrong with me
I have no clue what you are about to do, I have this thing and it's for you
and driving me insane

Last night I talked to you for a while, i was intrigued about your style
you hammered me away
I can't speak clearly I can't think, I thought I was the missing link,
that would put together the chain

I thought I was your missing link
but now I know I was so wrong
I thought I was your missing link

I'm working from 5 until 1, I'm working just to supply my lungs
with all the smoke they need
I have no clue when I am going to die, I hope it's when I'm really high
so I can jump the plane
this plane will take me to your heart someday so then I can be with you

In my own little way
but please tell me, some day that I can be with you, or kill the missing link

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Antifreeze's "Missing Link" explore the singer's feelings of uncertainty and desperation in their pursuit of love. The first verse sets the stage by describing the singer's mundane life, working long hours just to make ends meet. They feel restless and unsure of their place in the world, particularly when it comes to relationships. The second verse shows the singer attempting to pursue someone they are interested in, but feeling unsure of themselves and intimidated by the other person's confidence ("you hammered me away"). They begin to idealize themselves as the "missing link" that will complete this desired romance, but ultimately come to the realization that they were "so wrong" about their assumptions.

Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of longing and desperation for love and connection. The singer is willing to do whatever it takes, even if it means smoking copious amounts of cigarettes to calm their nerves or taking risky actions to get closer to their desired partner. However, the lyrics also recognize the potential for rejection and the pain that can come from unrequited feelings. The final line, "or kill the missing link," suggests a sense of resignation or even self-destructiveness in the singer's mindset.

I'm pretty sure that the 5.3 litre (LM7) V8 engines were built in Mexico & my 5.7 litre LS1 V8 engines were built at the St Catharines engine plant in Ontario,Canada.

I've had no problems with head cracking in mine & I've owned it for about 11 years & it has done over 346,000 kilometres.

Mine's fitted into a 2002 model Holden Commodore & that engine was only a problem when Holden started fitting them in 1999,they had a bad batch of engines where the Teflon coating wore off the piston skirts therefore causing piston slap & excessive oil consumption.

The engines were either rebuilt by Holden with 0.010" oversized pistons fitted or the engines were replaced, mine is unaffected by the problem as it was fixed up in 1999,mine doesn't consume oil.

The only head cracking problem Holden had was when Holden imported the Nissan RB30 engine for the VL Commodore back in 1986.

They had the inherent bonnet slope so the radiator sat lower than the front of the engine, if the cooling system wasn't properly bled, air pockets or bubbles would cause hot spots to develop in the cylinder head then cause it to crack.

So at $2000 AUD for a new cylinder head they weren't cheap, note I've never had any trouble with my VL Commodore when I was driving it as I always bled the cooling system, the question I ask is why didn't Holden fit a header tank & a fully sealed radiator into that car as they did when they fitted the 3.8 litre Buick V6 (LN3) into the next model (the VN Commodore) ?

That one was supposed to be fitted with the Nissan engine only that the foreign exchange rate made that engine too expensive so they resorted to fitting the U.S. made Buick V6 engine.

Note that my Commodore which is fitted with the LS1 engine is fitted with the same sort of coolant header tank which incorporates a pressure cap so maybe Holden decided to fit that in the alloy engined cars.

The ones fitted with the 3.6 litre V6 (Alloytec engine) have the pressure cap located on top of the engine & there's a special bleeding procedure for them, once the coolant is added to the engine, it must be warmed up to open the thermostat so that the engine can be fully topped up with coolant therefore fully bled of any air !

"They admit there's a problem, they know there's a problem, yet they ain't gonna pay for it..." - seems to be a common theme among many car manufacturers today. Thanks for providing us with some insight to an insidious issue.

@GemCat Case in point, all the Toyota trucks with frames that rotted to dust prematurely. Owners had to sue Toyota for a few billion dollars in 2016 before they would fix all the vehicles with it. Turns out they issued a "limited service campaign" but would only replace prematurely rotted frames if there were rust holes 10mm or larger. Only have 8mm holes? Toyota instructed them to cover the rot up with cheap undercoating spray. As I recall, Toyota really dragged their feet when it came to accelerator pedals they knew had an issue with become stuck in a depressed state. Waited until people started dying and the government to start an investigation before they started making it look like they were going to do anything about it. Then there was the whole rear diff thing with the 3rd gen Tacoma. They move axle production to Thailand a few years ago and the axles being shipped here were leaking and howling. They wait until Tacomas started leaking so much oil that they were locking up at highway speeds and causing accidents. Apparently 4 or 5 years later, the axles to howl and whine like crazy and they claim it's a wind resonance... even though these axles howl even when the truck is stationary and on a lift.

@Glenn Worton That is why some cars have good resale value.

@Mike TeeVeeDub There was a class action in Australia - would have thought there would be one in the U.S.

Easy fix, don't buy GM!

@Ghetto Wagon My dad had a 1989 that rusted pretty badly from the design of the bed. And the frame was pretty bad too. He would take pieces of iron and just weld them onto the frame to keep it going. The only thing I need to replace on my truck is the intermediate shaft. Otherwise it's good to go.
