I was from New Orleans and Fats lived in a house on Caffin Ave. it was a regular neighborhood ,no fancy big mansions . Every time I passed his house and he was out I would toot my horn and he would smile & wave , he was a regular guy . God Bless him , and rest in peace Fats

It was a standard down in New Orleans written by Drive em on down(a famous pianist) who taught it to Champion Jack Dupree who recorded it as Junkers Blues (hear it on youtube its note for note the same ) also Dupree recorded a version later in his life titled Alberta (also on youtube see for yourself) the same song echoed trugh New Orleans in variations. Professor Longhair recorded Tipitina Smiley Lewis and Toots Washington recorded Tee Nah Nah which are all the same song that good ol Drive em on down wrote but never recorded....

This was the beginning of rock and roll, a half a decade before Rock Around the Clock. I used to listen to Fats on WLAC in Nashville, TN, in the late forties and early fifties. We could pull that station in on our car radios all the way from central Indiana. The noted sponsor was Randy's Record Shop in Gallatin, TN.

My mom was a piano player at our big baptist church.( Oh yeah her and Jerry Lee played those triplets hard) She and my dad would drive from Baton Rouge, LA., almost every weekend to see him play. She always said," He would sit at everyone's table and talk." I would say, as a child, "Wow, you talk to celebrities?" and she would say "they put their pants on, one leg at a time." Using that simple explanation of a celebrity, I wound up meeting many super rock star legends. Because after all, they are just like me and you. I even met Jimmy Page later on. He was so nice, to give me opportunities, in the music industry.Thanks Fats, Jimmy, and Mom!

Hubby lived in NOLA for years, and he was there when Katrina struck in 2005. At first it was thought Fats Domino had been lost in the hurricane. He turned up later on, alive and ok, and remained with us for a few more years. How lucky for all of us!!

Soooo cool. Just found this song on an old cassette which I recorded in the early 80s by putting my cassette recorder besides the radio. I’m so happy I can hear it now in better quality. I mainly listen to Metal nowadays and man this is the Heavy Metal of yesterday. These are the roots of powerful, uplifting music, it’s clearly to hear. It’s the same kind of fun. Dave Bartholomew*, one of the architects of rock and roll, passed away at the age of 100 on June 23rd, 2019...
He partnered with Fats Domino on early rock classics including co-writing “Ain’t That a Shame.” The New Orleans trumpeter, band leader, producer, songwriter, and arranger was involved in many iconic songs including “Lawdy Miss Clawdy,” “Blueberry Hill,” “I’m Walking,” and “I Hear You Knocking”...
Bartholomew was band leader for one of New Orleans premier R&B bands when he became an A&R man for Imperial Records. At Imperial, he brought in Fats Domino, working with him on combining R&B with big band, jazz, and country to create early rock and roll. Bartholomew was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991...

Fats was and is the original mover and shaker that brought our fifties music into the forefront. His music is real with real musicians playing. Today's music, where everybody tries to play a guitar or should I say "makes noises with their guitar" because they are musically challanged and have no idea how to play or create music. Fats is one of the greatest.

Thanks for uploading this! It's probably my favorite Fats Domino song! One of the earliest rock and roll records. It sold over 1,000,000 copies after it came out in 1949, and is thought to be the first R&R to do so.

Right...recorded 10 December 1949 at J&M Studios, Rampart and Dumaine St., New Orleans, LA. With the Dave Bartholomew Orchestra (incl. Earl Palmer, drums; Herb Hardesty, tenor saxophone). BTW, listen to the subtle change in the beat and bass at 1:57...since this was so early in the game (1949), could that point be the first R&R beat on record? Hmmm...anyway, thank the Lord Dave (age 94) and Fats (age 89) are still with us! Ditto Chuck Berry (age 88) and Little Richard (age 82)...we MUST keep rocking!

Earl Palmer had played a backbeat on Chubby Newsome's "New Orleans Lover Man" in about January 1949 and Louis Joseph had played a backbeat on Alma Mondy's "A Job For A Jockey" in September 1949 -- and backbeat was also popular in 1948-1949 (and to a much lesser extent 1945-1947) in various cities other than New Orleans.

The thing is, although these tunes have some rock and roll patterns and mention "rock and roll" in their lyrics, they are nowhere as radical, in my view, as "The Fat Man".

I think is it pretty clear if you alternatively listen to the Fat Man and to the songs you have listed: the Fat Man is faster, heavier, more distorted, more agressive. We had to wait for Little Richards, almost 10 years later, to go further in badassness.

What about "Rock The Joint" by Chris Powell would you say isn't rock and roll?

Lots of non-rock-and-roll music has been fast, heavy, distorted, and/or aggressive. If you take fast, for instance, very fast blues were around in the '10s, '20s, and '30s, and when in the '50s people talked about the rock and roll style, they weren't talking about '10s-, '20s, or '30s-style fast blues, they were talking about the fad sound that reached top ten on the national black charts in 1948 and 1949.

+Joseph Scott You can't compare Rock The Joint to this, at least not the Chris Powell version. It has virtually no bass and the delivery is a lot smoother than The Fat Man. Maybe Jimmy's version of the song but even then I'd call the fat man heavier.
