Garota de Ipanema
Antonio Carlos Jobim/Astrud Gilberto/João Gilberto/Stan Getz Lyrics

Mais cheia de graça
É ela, menina
Que vem e que passa
Num doce balanço
A caminho do mar
Moça do corpo dourado
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, each one she passes goes ah
When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle
That when she passes, each one she passes goes ooh
(Ooh) But I watch her so sadly
How can I tell her I love her
Yes I would give my heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at me
Tall, (and) tan, (and) young, (and) lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, I smile but she doesn't see (doesn't see)
(She just doesn't see, she never sees me)
The lyrics to Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz's song Garota de Ipanema describe the beauty and grace of the girl walking on the beach in Ipanema, Brazil. The first verse praises her beauty and the way she moves, as she walks towards the sea with a gentle swaying motion. The second verse contrasts the singer's experience of being alone and sad, with the beauty and joy that the girl brings to the world as she passes by. The final verse expresses the singer's longing for the girl, and his frustration that she doesn't see him as he watches her walk away.
The lyrics are a celebration of the beauty of both the girl and the place where she lives - Ipanema, one of the most famous neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro. The song captures the essence of Brazilian culture, particularly the music and dance styles that originated in the country. The theme of unrequited love is also present, adding a touch of bittersweetness to the otherwise joyful lyrics.

My 17 year old daughter was just humming this amazingly beautiful tune. I looked at her and asked if she knew the song. She did not. Well, she does now! And we are dancing around our kitchen listening together. What a wonderful bonding moment. Peace and Love be with us all...
