The Girl from Ipanema
Antonio Carlos Jobim/João Gilberto/Stan Getz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking and
When she passes each one, she passes, goes, ah

When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gently
That when she passes each one, she passes, goes, ah

Oh, but he watches so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at him

Tall, and tan, and young, and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes he smiles, but she doesn't see

Oh, but he sees her so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at him

Tall, and tan, and young, and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes he smiles, but she doesn't see

She just doesn't see, no she doesn't see
But she doesn't see, she doesn't see, no she just doesn't see

Overall Meaning

The first verse of "The Girl from Ipanema" paints a vivid picture of a young woman who is tall, tan, and lovely. As she walks, she exudes a sense of effortless cool and gentle sway, much like the music of the samba. As she passes by, those who see her can't help but utter an "ah."

The second verse introduces a man who watches the girl from afar with a sense of sadness in his heart. He longs to tell her that he loves her, but he can't find the courage to do so. The girl walks past him each day as she heads toward the sea, absorbed in her own thoughts and unaware of the man's feelings toward her.

The refrain repeats the description of the girl's physical beauty and the way she captures the attention of all who see her. The man can only muster a smile as she passes by, knowing that she will never see him.

Overall, the song tells a story of unrequited love and the pangs of desire that can be felt from afar. The girl from Ipanema is the object of the man's affections, but she remains oblivious to his feelings even as she captivates him with her beauty and grace.

My 17 year old daughter was just humming this amazingly beautiful tune. I looked at her and asked if she knew the song. She did not. Well, she does now! And we are dancing around our kitchen listening together. What a wonderful bonding moment. Peace and Love be with us all...
